John Robert Gaskill, age 82, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2022 due to complications related to Alzheimer’s, surrounded by family at his home in Huntington Beach, California.

John was born on December 14, 1939, in Ogden, Utah, to Carl C. and Arita B. Gaskill. He was the second of three children and often recounted his wonderful memories of his older sister, Carolyn and younger brother, Doug. John grew up in Ogden, Utah playing golf, basketball, and baseball. His early years were spent at the Ogden Golf and Country Club learning and playing the game of golf, a sport he played throughout his life. As an avid golfer, he formed many personal and business relationships on the golf course. He won the Ogden City junior golf title in 1955 and played in the 1957 United States Junior Amatuer golf championship. During high school, he was the starting guard for the Ogden High basketball team, which was ranked #1 in the state at the time. After graduating from Ogden High in 1957, he went on to study at the University of Utah, where he received a B.S. degree in Accounting in 1961. While attending the U, John was a proud member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and played on the golf team. He married Susan Griffin in 1963 (later divorced). They spent their first years of marriage in Ogden and ultimately settled in Holladay, Utah in 1970 where they raised their four sons; Rob, Dave, Steve and Bill. John was very proud of his boys and supported their passions and interests. He remained very close to them and their families throughout his life. John was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in many callings.

John loved spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed the beach. In 2006 John began spending time between SLC and Newport Beach, CA where he met and married Tamra Pauline Anderson in 2007. Together they enjoyed traveling, and visiting family in Phoenix and SLC. His later years were spent between Newport Beach, Huntington Beach and Salt Lake City.

John was a successful businessman, banker, and real estate developer. He was involved in developing many grocery anchored shopping centers along the Wasatch Front and other western states. He had a “unique” and entertaining sense of humor and maintained an amazingly positive attitude throughout life. He taught his children the importance of having a “good name” and he influenced the lives of many people he encountered through his church leadership positions and business associations.

John is survived by his wife, Tamra; his brother, Doug; four sons, Rob (Carol) Gaskill, Dave (Kristy) Gaskill, Steve (Angie) Gaskill, and Bill (Jennifer) Gaskill; 5 stepchildren, Scott (Neilda) Anderson, Julie (John) McLean, Wendy (Eric) Shipley, Angie (Greg) Milius, and Sandie (John) Proctor, and many grandchildren, step grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father, Carl; his mother, Arita; and his sister, Carolyn.
