Paul David Mapes

August 3, 1951 - November 21, 2022

Paul David Mapes passed away on November 21, 2022, in Salt Lake City, Utah surrounded by family and friends after a valiant four-year battle with cancer.

Paul was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on August 3rd, 1951 to Jack Clair Mapes and Esther Larsen Mapes. Proceeded in death by his parents and older brother Jack C. Mapes. He leaves behind one daughter, Esther Mapes-Widner (Alex), Three granddaughters, Winonna Miller (Christopher), Cassandra Ure (Joseph), and Demetria Peterson (Shawn), and five great-grandchildren.

Paul was a voracious reader and great pathfinder, an avid skier, cyclist, motorcyclist, golfer, and outdoorsman. He loved military history and a good cheeseburger.

There are numerous stories of his adventures from coast to coast. Broken bones, avalanche survival, and epic skiing skills.

Paul was a very private man who clung to his independence to the very end. Although he preferred his autonomy he had a tight group of friends that he loved dearly and relished his time with them.

Paul dedicated his life to civil service and helping those in emergencies. He worked Ski Patrol at Brighton and Solitude ski resorts from 1970 to 1983. He then worked as a firefighter for Murray City from 1983 to 2002. His proudest accomplishment was becoming a Paramedic for Murray City, winning the award for Best Paramedic in 2002.

After his retirement, he rode cross country with friends on motorcycles and then traveled in his truck and camper before settling in the small town of Ferron, Utah.

He will be sorely missed and always remembered.
