Richard Miner

Richard A. Miner, 93, of Holladay Utah, passed away on February 3, 2023 peacefully, in his sleep.

Richard, nicknamed Dick, was born to Sylvia and Reginald Miner in Wellesley MA. After Dick graduated from Wellesley High School in 1947, he went on to study Mathematics at Dartmouth College, graduating in 1951.

After college, Dick started a fulfilling career in computers and computer languages that lasted his lifetime.  Dick worked on some of the earliest computers and designed and implemented computer language compilers, working for Honeywell for more than 40 years.

In 1958, Dick met and married his first wife Norma in Ontario Canada. Dick and Norma went on to have 3 children, Robert, Roger and Carol.  During their marriage, Dick and Norma lived in Philadelphia PA, Natick MA, Acton MA, Hilton Head SC and Park City UT.  Their active life together was lovingly centered around family and eventually revolved around being proud grandparents, often spotted on sidelines, behind dugouts, at the base of ski jumps, and clapping in the audience.  Norma passed away in 2010, after 51 years of happy marriage.

In 2011, Dick married his second wife Anita Catron in Salt Lake City, and they lived together in Holladay Utah. Dick thrived with the loving addition of Anita’s daughters and their active families to his life. Dick and Anita enjoyed 11 wonderful years of marriage, highlighted by vibrant dinner groups, love of art, music, travel, and being active in the Episcopal Church.

Dick’s favorite hobby his entire life was singing and performing music.  He proudly sang in his college glee club and then in both professional singing groups and in his church choirs.  Dick had a wonderfully smooth bass voice that was the foundation of many of his singing groups.  Ever the intellect, Dick loved to read, keep current with news, and was a master of puzzles, enjoying crosswords and his daily Wordle.  His love of sports, especially the Red Sox and New England Patriots, was something he proudly passed down to future generations.  Throughout his life, Dick was a generous supporter of charities and volunteered his time in his church, acting as a Trustee and Treasurer in numerous churches.

Dick was predeceased by his sister Marjorie Morris, his first wife Norma, and his son Roger.  Dick is survived by his wife Anita Miner, his son Robert Miner (Kathy), his daughter Carol Snyder (Fred Dickerson), his stepdaughters Stephanie Orfanakis (Mike) and Ruth Hadlock (Nathan) and their children, his grandchildren Kim Miner, David Snyder, Gayle Miner, and Adam Snyder, and his great-grandson Remy Forgione-Miner.

Services will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, Salt Lake City UT on Saturday, February 18, 2023 at 11:00 a.m.  A second memorial service will be held in the Acton / Wellesley Massachusetts area in the spring.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Habitat for Humanity or the American Cancer Society, organizations Dick felt strongly about.
