Lorraine “Nunu” Williams
Our “Sweet Lorraine” passed away on March 3, at her daughter and son-in-law’s home in Salt Lake City. Lorraine was born on August 10, 1927, to Ange and Frank Cassidy. She was the oldest of their 4 children. She was raised in Walkerville and attended St. Lawrence School and Butte High.
Her mother knew she was ready for school, so she enrolled her in first grade at age 5. She excelled in typing and shorthand, so upon her graduation at age 16 she got a job with Largey Lumber. She told many stories about taking the bus to the lumber yard in the dark; learning the ropes of how to sell lumber, hardware, and do all of their bookkeeping.
She met her handsome sailor, Russell Williams, at a dance. After he returned from the war, they were married in 1953. With her knowledge of building products and Russ’ hard work ethic they built a home from the ground up on Harvard Avenue. They took loving care of their meticulous home and yard. After Russ’ death in 1987, she cared for it alone (with help from neighbors and friends) until she was 91.
Russ and Lorraine loved to camp in the beautiful Montana mountains in their trailer, sharing many memories in Big Sky Country.
Lorraine was known for her delicious baked goods, and her willingness to share them. You were a lucky person to get a plate of her famous cookies. She spent her Thursday nights bowling for Phil Judd’s for over 35 years. She was in the record books for many years with her high game of 288. She loved her “Bowling Gals,” her “Thursday Night Ladies,” and her weekly trips to the beauty salon where she visited with her friends. She also loved to paint yard and home decorations. Lorraine, Sis, and Shar had their work displayed all over Butte. Lorraine was a devout Catholic. She loved to pray the rosary and felt such comfort in the prayers.
Most of all, Lorraine loved her family. She was so proud of her daughter Rhea, and son-in-law Pete. She was known as “Nunu” to her grandchildren Nick, Talia and Luke, and all of their friends. She was present at their most important events traveling all over Utah, Oregon, and Colorado for their high school and college sporting events. She was once shown on TV praying the rosary at the Utah High School State Basketball Championships!
Her latest pride and joys were her great-grandchildren, Ruby, Lila and Dylan. She loved spending time with them in London and Utah, of course, they adored her.
Lorraine was the ultimate Jazz basketball fan. She loved watching, attending, and cheering on her guys. She knew their stats, players and record. She would discuss the games after watching with her grandson and son-in-law to give her critique of how they played.
Waiting for her in heaven are her parents Ange and Frank Cassidy, husband Russ, sister and brother-in-law Muggs and Brud Fleming, brother-in-law Gary Loggins, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Sis and Bill Gilbert, and many friends and family.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Rhea and Pete Hristou, grandchildren Nick (Anna) Hristou, Talia (Mike) Monroe and Luke Hristou. Her great- grandchildren Ruby, Lila and Dylan Hristou. Her sister Sis Loggins(Don Offee), brother Frank (Margaret) Cassidy. Her best buddy Maria Hristou, and many nieces, nephews and cousins who she loved dearly.
We thank the kindness of A plus Home Health and Hospice. We especially want to thank Dr. Margaret Grogan, Cory, Sergio, Stefanie, and Mari. She loved the kindness of her Salt Lake friends who visited her and made her feel a part of every celebration for the last three years.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, March, 10th, 2023 at 2:00PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East. Guests are encouraged to use the parking and entrance on the north side of the building. A Celebration of Life and interment will be held in August in Butte.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that you donate to either St. Vincent DePaul Catholic School, Judge Memorial Catholic High School in Salt Lake (where her grandchildren attended school), or the Gary Loggins Memorial Scholarship at Butte High School c/o Sherrie Stewart.
