"Penny"

Penny died at 93 years old at her residence in Holladay, Utah. She will be remembered for her incredible sense of humor that could make any group cry with laughter, and her gracious hosting to fortunate guests that always included an abundance of her excellent cooking.

Penny was born in Madison, Maryland near Baltimore. She was the sixth of eight children born to Bertha Brooke Tregoe and Samuel Tregoe. She attended Cambridge High School and Baltimore Business College. She met the love of her life, Joseph Raymond Wirts, who wrote her beautiful love letters while he was away with the Navy during WWII. They married in 1946 after his return from service. They had their first and only child in 1951, Joseph Raymond Wirts Junior, or "Ray Junior." After Ray Senior finished law school, he was hired to work for the National Labor Relations Board and assigned to work in Broomsfield (Denver), Colorado. The family stayed in Colorado for almost five years and then moved to San Rafael, California. Ray Senior and Penny resided in San Rafael for 26 years. After Ray Junior left home, Penny began working at Marin General Hospital running the phone switch boards. After Ray Senior and Penny retired, they decided to move to St. George, Utah to be closer to Ray Junior and their granddaughter, Joni, who lived in Salt Lake City, Utah. Penny eventually moved to Salt Lake City after Ray Senior passed away to be closer to her son.

Penny was an excellent bridge player. She was excellent at sewing and crafting. Penny also learned to ski while living in Colorado and enjoyed skiing while visiting her son in Utah. She enjoyed golf as it was also her husband's passion in his post-retirement years. Ray and Penny loved living in the west, but also loved visiting family back East as much as possible through the years.

Penny is survived by her granddaughter Joni, niece Nancy (and John) German, niece Catherine (and John) Andrews, niece Bonnie (and Michael) Maglia, and many other nieces and nephews. Penny is predeceased by her husband Ray Senior, son Ray Junior, sister Betty Lawrence, and all of her other siblings.

Penny's memorial service will be Friday, June 2nd at 12:00pm at the Wasatch Presbyterian Church, 1626 S. 1700 E., Salt Lake City, 84108. A reception and luncheon will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dr. Ray Wirts Memorial Fund at the Wasatch Presbyterian church (801)487-7576.
