John E. Ward was born in Clear Creek, Utah on the 24th of June 1923, to Emma and Joseph Ward. Always a hard worker, he joined the CCC as a young teen and sent money home to his mother. At the beginning of World War II, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps with his brother, Bill, and served his country in the South Pacific as an airplane mechanic. After the war, John got a job delivering fish to local markets where he met the love of his life, Evelyn Inez Mark, at Berns Foods. They were married May 27, 1949, in Elko, Nevada. They built a new home in Murray, Utah where they raised their two beautiful daughters, Susan Pope (Keith) and Debra Smith. As a proud member of the 2 million-mile club, John drove tanker trucks all over the Intermountain area until his retirement in 1980, when he became a grandfather. John was proud to be a grandpa to Nicholas Pope and Christina Pope (Hal) and spent his retirement years with Evie doting over their family. After 3 and half years of heartache, John left the evening of June 8 to join Evie for an early celebration of his 94th birthday.
Services will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City with a visitation beginning at 6:00 PM, followed by a Vigil at 7:00 PM.
