George Rodney Stanger, 82, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, surrounded by members of his family. Hailing from Pocatello, Idaho, George came from a humble background, yet he always strived for and knew he was destined for more than life on the farm; and he was right. George served his country honorably in the United States Army for more than twenty years with tours of duty that included Italy, Viet Nam, Korea, and stateside. After retiring from the Army as a Master Sergeant, George had a successful 30-year management career in the private sector as well as the social security administration.

George was a good and faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he touched many, many, lives. While living in the State of Washington, he served as a bishop on two occasions as well as a high counselor in several stakes. After retiring, George and Helen relocated to Utah where they served a service mission together at Intermountain Medical Center.

George was blessed with a great sense of humor, sarcasm, and a razor-sharp wit. He made countless people laugh and was a joy to be around. All those who had the good fortune to know him will miss him.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 56 years, Helen; his children Gretchen (Phillip), Gordon (Lorene), Stephanie (Jamie), and Gary (Sandra); as well as 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

A viewing will take place Monday, June 19, 2017, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East in Salt Lake City. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at 11:00 am at the LDS Stake Center located at 240 Greenwood Circle in Midvale. The burial, with military honors, will take place at the Utah Veterans Cemetery & Memorial Park at Camp Williams in 17111 S. Camp William Rd., Bluffdale.

The Stanger family extends love and thanks to all the healthcare providers who assisted George in his final days; especially the wonderful staff at Aspen Ridge West Rehabilitation Center and Inspiration Hospice.
