The world has lost another WWII hero with the death of Jerry on Thursday, September 14, 2017. He was born in Hebron, Nebraska. His parents were Maude Mae Altell and Walter Frank Powell. He was a hard worker in his father's clothing store where he learned to do alterations. This work didn't interfere with his being able to play high school football and basketball.

He formed an early love for flying, took lessons and became a cadet. He was proud of the fact that he and a friend rebuilt an old plane. He was in the cadet program when WWII started and he was able to join the Army Air Force. He flew over 57 missions in a P38 (his first love). He was stationed in Foggia, Italy and flew the Rhine Land.

Following the war, he finished his schooling at the University of Nebraska where he earned degrees in mechanical and commercial engineering. While there, he was a member of the Air National Guard and was the governor's pilot.

He married Eileen Story in 1947. They had three sons Steven (Peggy), Richard (Lindsay) and Kelly. Eileen passed away in 2001. After twelve years of dating, he married his golfing buddy and best friend, Nan Conver.

He worked 30 years for Amoco Oil (Standard Oil of Indiana) as an engineer and manager.

Jerry was a member of Elks, Saturday Night Dance Club, Air National Guard Pilots Association, 82nd Fighter Group and American Legion. He was an avid sportsman and had a sport for every season - Tennis, golf, fishing, hunting, and skiing.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ken; and his first wife, Eileen.

He is survived by his wife, Nan; sons Steve, Rick and Kelly; eight grandchildren; and 24 great grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank Alta Care of Holladay and Sandy for their loving care of Jerry.

A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, September 25, 2017 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East. Guests are encouraged to use the complimentary valet parking on the north side of the building. Jerry will be laid to rest in a private family graveside service at Larkin Sunset Garden, 2350 East 1300 South, Salt Lake City.
