Alan Garney Potvien

You Can Call Me AL

Alan Garney Potvien ("Al"), 57, of Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away peacefully on Sept. 2, 2012, surrounded by family and friends, after a brave battle with leukemia. Al worked at the DABC, for 32 years as a senior compliance officer and retired this past spring to enjoy a summer at home with his family. He was a graduate of Denfeld High, Class of 73 and a graduate of University of Wisconsin, Superior. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Duluth, and St. Vincent's Catholic Church, SLC. Al was an avid hockey player and enjoyed many years of hockey and softball. He enjoyed coaching his sons in baseball and hockey. Sports were a passion of his. He hosted many fun Superbowl parties.

Al married Linda Boardwell on June 27, 1980 in Duluth. He is survived by his loving wife Linda and 3 beautiful children, Tessa Lin, Marc Alan Garney, and Jay Wm.; his mother Helen Potvien of Duluth; siblings Monica of Nanaimo B.C., Gerard (Mary) of Appleton, Renee (Scott) of Salt Lake City, Anita (Fred) of Duluth, Tom of Denver, and Tim of Minneapolis; nieces and nephews, Dylan, Dustin, Angela, John, Cliff, April, Sara, Matt, Chris, Kate, Blaise; great nieces Holly and Chelsea; many nieces, nephews, family and friends from Duluth, Minn.; and friend Doug Sloan of SLC. Al was preceded in death by his father Garney Potvien (the Great Fellow).

Al will affectionately be remembered by his family and many friends as an incredibly self-less man and a loving father, husband and brother. He was the life of the party, full of hospitality, welcoming friends and family always. His sense of humor could not be matched, and his love of the outdoors and traveling was something he cherished. He was a trusting brother and always there with a helping hand and a loving hug. Al was one of a kind and will be greatly missed by all. We Love you Big Al!

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 1375 East Spring Lane, on Thursday, September 6, 2012 at 11:00 AM. A viewing will be held at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, on Wednesday, September 5 from 6 to 8 PM.
