Alfred Guevara
July 23, 1953 - August 10, 2023
Alfred (Fred) Guevara moved on from this mortal life on Thursday, August 10 at the age of 70.
He leaves behind his beautiful wife of 50 years, Barbara; children Troy (Sherry), Shea (Lauren), and Ashlee (Cameron) Sirois; grandchildren Shannon, Sierra, TJ, Jacob, and Shaylin Guevara; Marley, Asher, Jude, and Ari Guevara; and Hazel and Charlie Sirois, sisters; Barbara Ann Sanchez (Rick) and Gloria Scoville and brothers; Richard (Claudine), Keith (Ginnie), Don (Jolie) and Ron (Lynn), many close nieces and nephews, and plenty of unused brick which we get to lovingly clean up or use in his honor.
We will miss Dad’s tall tales, most of which were borderline absurd but somehow believable. The grandkids think grandpa at one time really could beat a deer up a hill in a foot race. Or that grandpa once snuck up on a mountain lion, wrestled it, and lived to tell the tale. Some of Fred’s tales however did end up being proven true, only adding to the difficulty to discern truth from fiction in his tales. Dad was and is—a sort of strong, unflinching legend to all who know him. Through his stories and with humor was able to teach us the importance of faith, love for the outdoors, and hard work. As his children and grandchildren matured, we found that many of the little statements Dad uttered hold great truths and loving principles. We as a family will be reminiscing and discussing his stories and “pearls of wisdom” for years to come.
Dad believed in the virtues of hard work and is proud of the many buildings he laid brick or block on throughout the valley. Though he was quick to point out the commercial work he did, he was most proud of the bespoke and artistic brick and stone work he did on mailboxes, patios, and fireplaces that many of us are the recipients of. If you like his work great, if you didn’t too bad—it is cement and stone, it is there for good.
If Dad wasn’t on a job, he could be found in his backyard working on a project of his own or looking up and speculating the cosmos. An avid outdoorsman; Dad loved to snow ski and camp with loved ones, and spend time in his boat fishing with the “kids”. But we think his favorite activity was playing board games with the grandkids and continued to teach them chess moves up to his passing.
Dad loved a good classic rock song from bands such as Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Creedence, and old-school country songs from artists like Jim Croce or Johnny Cash. But his favorite was the neo-soul, sophisticated music of Sade.
He was always quick to help family, friends, or complete strangers out of a jam—be it, a bit of cash when needed or driving through a winter white-out to help you get a vehicle unstuck, he would help anybody with anything. His trusting heart and compassion for the troubled was one of his primary defining characteristics. Though maybe a bit too trusting at times? He paid way too much for that fake gold jewelry in the store parking lot.
He wasn’t much for sentiment but would want his brothers and sisters to know how much they all meant to him, he spoke of his siblings often. Was proud of all of his children and very proud of his grandchildren and bragged about them often.
Fred is preceded in death by his parents Albert and Barbara Guevara; mother and father-in-law Jerry and Keith Wiseman; and brothers-in-law Joseph and Terry Wiseman.
A celebration of life will be on August 22, 2023 from 6-8 PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Millcreek, Utah.
