Betty Southwick
May 1, 1946 - November 22, 2022
Betty Marie Southwick passed away at home in Salt Lake City on November 22nd 2022, surrounded by loved ones. She was born on the 1st of May 1946 in Redmond Oregon to Martin Nice and Iona Williams. She was the 5th of 9 children. She was a confident, spunky woman who cared for her family and friends like no other.
She married Dwaine Ogborn in 1964 who she later divorced. They had two beautiful children together, their son Rickey Dwaine Ogborn in 1965 and daughter Machelle Marie Sandhu in 1970.
Betty was remarried in 1999 to the love of her life, Dr. Grant Hansen Southwick who passed away in 2012 after 30 wonderful years of marriage. The two of them got up to all kinds of fun together, traveling anywhere their hearts took them. Nothing could ever keep the pair from Lake Powell though, where Betty would spend her days sun bathing, swimming, water-skiing and exploring the beautiful landscapes the area had to offer.
When she wasn't traveling, Betty would spend hours tending to her gardens. She had the greenest thumb of anyone her family had ever known and had gardens overflowing with the most stunning roses. She also enjoyed sports, bowling, playing golf and racquetball regularly. She loved to play cards and dominoes with friends, as well as tailgating at University of Utah games. Betty was also an avid reader and lover of crime dramas and Hallmark movies.
Betty enjoyed her life with a very loving and ever growing group of family, friends and pets. Survived by her daughter Machelle Sandhu (Ron Salisbury), granddaughter Gabi Boyce, brother Oli Nice (Daryl), and pets Scrappy and Calli. She also enjoyed time with Esteban and Laurie Galvez and their wonderful family, who became something of a found family for Betty, caring for her as one of their own and enjoying so many memories together.
Betty was also well cared for later in life by her Neurologist Dr. Justin Meuse. Thank you for your care and always advocating above and beyond. Dr. Beth Hanlon your care was exemplary and it has been an honor to know you as a physician, one of the truly special ones and as a person. You are an incredibly special human on this earth. We would also like to thank the staff at The Wellington and Home Instead, who took such good care of Betty during the final leg of her journey, providing fun, comfort and kindness when she needed it most.
Thank you to all the neices, nephews and friends who came to visit in her final weeks. Last but certainly not least we would like to extend the biggest thank you to Dr. Richard Southwick and his wife Sherrie. You have made such a difference with your care and attention not only this year but in many years past.
A celebration of Betty's full and wonderful life will be on Friday, December 9, 2022 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City. We ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the National Prion Disease Pathology Surveillance Center.
In Loving Memory
