Boyd Franklin Ingalls

Our dear father, Boyd Franklin Ingalls, slipped away peacefully on October 19, 2018, after living a long, full and vital life. Boyd was born in Salt Lake City on November 5, 1921 to Jeannette Marie Bolognese and Mark Pitt Ingalls. Boyd was very close to his maternal grandmother, Anna Bolognese, who nurtured his faith in the Catholic Church as well as imparting the zest of his Italian heritage. Anna ensured that Boyd and his brother Robert Ingalls (preceded in death) went to mass every Sunday. Boyd remained a devout Catholic all his life.

Growing up in Salt Lake, Boyd became an Eagle Scout in his teens and then went on to study zoology and German at the University of Utah. He eventually fulfilled his dream of studying medicine and helping people by becoming a dentist. 

It was while he was attending Georgetown dental school in Washington DC that he met the love of his life, Dorothy Marie Yurick (preceded in death) from Billings, MT. He couldn’t take his eyes off of her from the moment he saw her at mass on Sunday and he knew she was the one! They began dating, fell in love and were married on September 9, 1950 at St. Matthews Cathedral in Washington DC.

A large young family began to take shape with the arrival of Bryon (Tohnnie) Ingalls, and Carol (Dale) Matuska. Once settled back in Salt Lake four more children filled their home: Christopher (Diane) Ingalls, Diane (ex-Steve) Reid, Susan (Todd) Brashear, and Jennifer (Jeff) Drutman. Boyd and Dorothy enjoyed the love of 9 grandchildren, who all loved Nana and G-pa.

Boyd served his country in the military, first by joining the Army ROTC in 1943-1946, earning a discharge of 1st lieutenant. Following dental school he joined the Air Force for 2 years, serving in the Philippines and at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas, where he was discharged as a captain. Once his military commitments were completed Boyd and Dorothy moved their young family to Salt Lake in 1953. He began a successful 45 year dental practice, which he loved deeply. It was a career achievement of which he was very proud!

Boyd had a fun and quirky sense of humor, which endeared him to many friends and patients alike. He would embarrass his kids by wearing a set of goofy buck-teeth that he made and drove them around town while giving awkward looks to other drivers! He got a kick out of such cringe worthy antics! Boyd loved to socialize at the Cottonwood Club with Dorothy, making many dear friends. He golfed with buddies on Thursdays, and when his game fell apart, the guys would meet for coffee almost every morning to discuss life and world events. He loved his sweet little dogs Mickey and Peaches. 

Boyd philosophized much and is noted to have said, “life in general is a big accomplishment.” He accomplished much, loved deeply, and argued strongly. He set his family up with a solid foundation of moral values and a love of family and life. Rest In Peace old man.

A celebration of life will be held Friday, October 26, 2018 from 6:00-8:00pm at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City, UT 84106. Guests are encouraged to use the complimentary valet parking on the north side of the building. A funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 2:00pm at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 1975 South 2300 East, Salt Lake City, UT 84108. Interment to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 4th Avenue at T Street, Salt Lake City, UT 84103.
