Carl Dennis Borup

April 21, 1943 - March 12, 2025

Salt Lake City, UT-Carl Dennis Borup, 81, of Salt Lake City, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Dennis, as he was known, was the oldest child of Hazel Backus and Carl Eric Borup. He grew up in a lively household in Salt Lake City with three younger brothers: Jim, David, and Steven. Some of his fondest early memories were of hunting and fishing trips with his dad and brothers in the mountains of Utah.

Dennis was drawn to leadership and working with others and served as Student Body President of South High School in 1961. He graduated from the University of Utah, where he made many lifelong friends in the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He married college sweetheart Connie McCormick and soon they welcomed their daughter Rachel. The small family then moved to Holladay where they lived happily for many years. Dennis was legendary in the neighborhood for his beautiful flowers and tidy yard.

Dennis worked at IBM where he was again drawn to leadership roles and made many lifelong friends through his career. He loved to bring friends from different parts of his life together for fishing trips at the McCormick family cabin in Island Park, Idaho. Not all of the stories from those fishing trips have been independently verified.

In retirement, Connie and Dennis loved spending time with their two adored granddaughters, Lucy and Alice, about whom Dennis could and did brag for hours. Connie and Dennis also enjoyed traveling the world together. On safari in Zimbabwe, they listened to lions roaring outside their tent at night. In Tibet, they drank yak butter tea with the locals. Those were some of the best times of their lives.

When Dennis’s health declined, he joined the community at the Wellington where he made more good friends. The family would like to thank the staff at the Wellington for their special care of Dennis.

Dennis is predeceased by his parents, Hazel and Carl Borup, and his brother Jim Borup. He is survived by brothers David Borup and Steven Borup (wife Nilda), wife Connie Borup, daughter Rachel Borup, son-in-law Andrew Gettig, and granddaughters Lucy Borup-Douglas and Alice Gettig and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Dennis’s life at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 S. 900 E., Millcreek, UT, Friday, March 28, 5-7PM.
