Carma Louise Ewer

November 1, 1951 - March 2, 2025

“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” A.A. Milne (Winnie the Pooh)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Carma Louise Ewer on March 2, 2025 after battling cancer for six years. Carma was our cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, teacher, and mentor and will be greatly missed by all those who knew her.

Carma was born in Lexington, Nebraska on November 1, 1951 to Bertha and Christian Rickertsen. As the daughter of a farmer, Carma grew up in a tight-knit community supported by her family and church, which provided her the foundation to excel later in life.

Carma graduated with a Bachelors in Elementary Education from the University of Nebraska and later earned her Masters Degree in Education from Utah State University. Carma was an elementary school teacher for over 30 years, during which she devoted her special skills to children in underserved communities.

Growing up in a 4-H family she developed a love of animals and showmanship. This carried on to showing in AKC dog competitions for nearly 50 years. She was known as a mentor to many beginners in the sport, functioning as show chair and a club officer for both the Group IV Terrier Club and the Bonneville Basin Kennel Association, as well as serving as national president for the American Miniature Schnauzer Club. Most notably, over the past 20 years, she has been the breeder of the top-winning AKC Miniature Schnauzers nine times, including her favorite, “Twink”, who holds the AKC record for the most Best in Show wins.

Carma touched the lives of both children and adults alike in teaching and in the dog show arena as a mentor. With both love and patience, she generously shared her time and expertise with anyone who needed them. She loved her family and was fiercely proud of her three children, eight grandchildren, and one great-grandson. Each had a special relationship with mom/grandma and are grateful for the cherished memories of time spent together over holidays, ball games, family gatherings, baking cookies, and playing with puppies.

Carma leaves behind her husband of 51 years, Galen Ewer, children William Ewer, Dana (Dusty) Ewer, and Gayle (Josh) Ewer, grandchildren Ashlee (Nate) Ewer-Jensen, Kyle (Ally), Colbie, Lilliann, and Danika Ewer, Gabriel Allred, Oliver and Jack Heyrend, and great-grandchild Xavier Jensen.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, March 11 at 2:00 p.m. at Cottonwood Presbyterian Church, 1580 Vine Street, Murray, Utah, followed by a reception that evening from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City. Guests are encouraged to use parking and entrance located on the north side of the building.

In Loving Memory

My heart is broken. Carma was such a wonderful helpful person. She would jump in anytime and help. Had it not been for Carma, I never would’ve had miniature schnauzers. Coming from a background of giant schnauzers it was pretty natural to end up with miniature schnauzers as well. And she was just the person to teach me. She had incredible patients. But she always did say that if we lost the breed that day, we could always find the wine store earlier. We had some great travel adventures and some incredible parties. She will be greatly missed. And my heart goes out to Galen and the family. You are in my thoughts, Karen Child.

This is a very hard goodbye. Carma was my mentore and friend in Miniature Schnauzers. She was always helpful and a great teacher. My first bred by puppy was due to her taking a chance on my first Schnauzer. I was so new and she let me use Cooper. Than for years Carma opened her home to me, gave great advice, had fun evaluating puppies, taught as only she could in so many ways. We had good times. I always admired Galen at shows and at their home how loving he was to Carma and her back at him. Condolences to Galen and Carmas lovely family. Love and light!

Our deepest condolences to Galen and the Ewer Family. We first met Carma and Galen almost 25 years ago when we received our first little Miniature Schnauzer, Peppermint Patty; then Heidi and Goldie. Carma not only offered her grooming services to our girls, but she provided us with such invaluable advice and friendship. Even after moving to southern Utah and our girls grew into their senior years, we would travel to Salt Lake City as Carma and Galen were the only ones they trusted to groom them. We looked forward to seeing Carma and hearing all about her latest shows and awards. She had such a passion for her dogs and was truly the best! She was a wonderful person and will be dearly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with Galen and the Ewer Family.

I met Carma later in life as I was new to the dog show world as an older adult and she was wonderful. Full of knowledge and so willing to help with support and guidance. She was everything a breeder, groomer and exhibitor in the dog world hoped to be. She will be greatly missed in the fancy but will always be remembered. Fly with the Angels Carma!!what a privilege to have known you.

Sending much love and prayers to Galen. You and Carma welcomed me into the Ewer family over 50 years ago. Carma was always smiling and was a kind, wonderful lady with a beautiful soul. I really enjoyed her company. Although miles separated us over time, I have very fond memories of Carma. God's love certainly embraced His wonderful servant throughout her life. Sincerest sympathy to all of the family.
