Catherine Rose Mason
October 26, 1944 - October 11, 2021
Cathy was born on October 26, 1944 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of Henry and Lucille (Abersfeller) Bloemer. She grew up and attended Catholic schools in Omaha, graduating from St. Joseph High School in 1962. She then went on to obtain her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Creighton University in 1966. Cathy was united in marriage with Jesse L. Mason on May 20, 1967, and in 1968 they made their home in Salt Lake City, Utah. They were married for 25 years.
Cathy had a distinguished career as a Registered Nurse for 50 years, over 30 years of which were spent in the Intensive Care Unit at Holy Cross Hospital (now Salt Lake Regional Medical Center). She had a gift for caring for the very sick with compassion and grace.
She was a devout Catholic and member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, where she was an active volunteer for several decades. Her church family was very important to her, and she developed very close relationships with her Holy Bible study companions. Cathy enjoyed life to the fullest with many hobbies to include sewing, scrapbooking, gardening, flowers, travel, good food, and time spent with friends, to name a few. Books and reading were her passion, and she had a life-long love of learning, taking several classes through the University of Utah following her retirement in 2014. Most of all, she loved being with her family.
All who knew her knew what a fighter she was. She fought with everything she had to beat multiple diagnoses of cancers, over more than two decades. She continued to work, travel, and spend time with her now-growing family, as she reveled in the joy that grandchildren bring. Cathy’s favorite season was Autumn, and though these last few months were the hardest in her fight, it didn’t stop her from living out one of her life’s dreams to see the changing leaves in Maine. It was there, surrounded by her children, that she was welcomed into the arms of Jesus on October 11, 2021.
We offer our sincere thanks to the medical staff at the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City, Utah, who cared for her over the course of many years. We cannot express enough gratitude for the nurses and staff at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, Maine, who attended to her with such great care and dignity in her final days and hours.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Linda (Rich) Dewhirst of Rock Port, Missouri, Mike (Char) Mason of Kearns, Utah, Matt (Terri) Mason of West Jordan, Utah, and Christiane (Adam) Christensen of West Jordan, Utah; grandchildren: Emily, Amanda, Ryan, Alex, Porter, Norah, Colton, Cassidy, Alayna, Adrianna, and one on the way; sister, Theresa Cannon of Omaha, Nebraska; many nieces and nephews; and countless friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, beloved Aunt Catherine Abersfeller, and brother-in- law David Cannon.
A Celebration of Catherine's life will be on Wednesday, November 3, 2021 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East Salt Lake City, Utah. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Ann Catholic Church on Thursday, November 4, 2021 at 12:00 noon, 450 East 2100 South, Salt Lake City, Utah. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 11:45. A private family burial at Calvary Cemetery in Omaha, Nebraska will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Cathy’s name to St. Ann Catholic Church of Salt Lake City or the Huntsman Cancer Institute.

Cathy.. She was a second mother to me as Matt and I grew up together. I have so many fond memories and stories she blessed me to know in my life. From dropping us to school and feeding me delicious meals at her dinner table. She was a strong respectable figure in everyones eyes. Graceful and witty. Living life on hard mode yet brave and strong enough to keep going. Her love was full, her expression was loving and caring. This world is now missing a very special person. My heart aches for the loss and my words fail to express the reassurance for her family during this difficult time. I'm certain Cathy is in heaven looking down and proud of her family and the many good things she did while she was here on earth. Thank you for your love and the wonderful example.

I first met Catherine in St. Ann Parish a few years ago and then attended the Holy Bible classes together. Besides the class meetings, the home and hospital visits to her enable me to learn a bit more about this great and affable lady. Catherine was not only knowledgeable in her past profession as a RN, but also good in handcrafts and a devoted fellow Bible reader. Certainly, she was a devout Catholic. I wish I would have met her long time ago. May God welcome you to His Kingdom and May God bless your family.
