David Carl Mathot, beloved son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend passed away peacefully Tuesday, December 9th, surrounded by the immeasurable love of his three sisters. He was 57.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA, David arrived in this world at a time when a Down Syndrome diagnosis was often spoken of as a tragedy. His family soon learned what the world eventually came to see. David was not a tragedy; he was a gift. His presence transformed every life he touched. He had a purity of heart, a sincere spirit, and a gentleness that made him an angel on this earth. David radiated love in its most genuine form.
David was so proud of his Pittsburgh roots and just as proud to be a Pittsburgh Steeler fan. On game days he would wave his Terrible Towel or if more convenient, a slipper sock.
One of David’s greatest accomplishments was his 25-year career at McDonald’s in Arizona, where he worked proudly and diligently making French fries. Work gave him purpose and he wore his McDonald’s hat, pins, and shirts like badges of honor.
After moving back to Salt Lake City, he worked for Murray School District for nine years shredding papers. He loved chatting with the office staff who he held in high regard. They were always kind and supportive.
David’s nieces, nephews, siblings, and extended family were the center of his world. He celebrated their successes and his hugs were legendary! He had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel loved.
David’s life was a reminder that joy can be simple. He was kind, appreciated the littlest of things, and loved without condition.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Jim Mathot. His parents, William and Eileen Mathot. He is survived by his sisters, Patti (Mike) Sloot, Karen Mathot, Connie (John) Buckner, sister-in-law, Heather (Jim) Mathot, Lisa Evans (his beloved girlfriend of 43 years) and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 10, 2026 at 11 AM at St. Vincent’s Catholic Church. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Special Olympics of Utah under Salt Lake Stars.
