David James Carlin

June 17, 1958 - September 19, 2023

September 19, 2023, David James Carlin, 65, passed away doing what he loved best, fishing with his son Seth at Strawberry Reservoir after they went antelope hunting. He is survived by his wife Julie, sons Seth and Ben and sister Mary (h. David).

David was born in Fall River, WI on June 17, 1958, graduated Fall River High School in 1976 and then attended the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, where he graduated in 1981. He loved the Green Bay Packers was a devoted “Cheesehead” to the end.

David and Mary Ann Neuman were high school sweethearts. After graduating, they married and moved to Salt Lake. They had one son, Ben. After Mary passed, David married Pam Miner, and he made her children his own, blending their families. They later divorced and he married Julie. They had Seth, who became David’s fishing and hunting buddy.

David was an outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting elk, deer, and antelope. He was especially proud when he could “put meat on the table” for his family. If you have ever been hunting with David, you know what 3 repeated shots mean. He believed the best things happened at first and last light, whether in the back country or in life. When fishing, he always had to catch the “limit”. He enjoyed teaching his sons the skills and etiquette of the outdoors.

He was a dedicated runner, waking long before the sun rose, whether rain, snow, or shine. His family often joined local area races together earning medals and T-shirts. David ran several marathons and half marathons. He is very proud of his Seth’s accomplishments on his Cross-Country team at Jordan High School

David enjoyed being a Graphic Designer for CHG Healthcare and LifeVantage. He loved and cherished all the people he worked with and considered them family.

He was proceeded in death by his parents Russell James (1988) and Delores Ann Heller (2003), sisters Linda (?) and Patricia Ann (2020), brother Gary Joseph (2020) and his first wife Mary Ann Neuman (1989).

A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 300 E. 11800 S. Draper Utah on Tuesday, September 26 at 1:00 pm.

Julie, Seth and Ben Needless to say I'm stunned. D J is one of the best, the times we spent camping and fishing will never be forgotten. Our fishing bets, dollar, dollar, dollar, first biggest and most haha, Nobody ever paid up but we always had the bet. We spent so many Current Creek Father's Day camping together, it's still a annual for us.  Working together for so many years was great. He had a high integrity bar and was always ready to the extra mile.  My sincere condolences.  RIP Cowboy.

Julie, Seth & Ben,  I am so sorry & sad for the loss of your husband & dad. He was so proud of his family.  He was such a great guy.  I worked with DJ for over 11 years and considered him a dear friend.  He was always so thoughtful and caring to everyone around him and would do anything he could to help.  I will miss teasing him and hearing him laugh. There are lots of prayers going up that you all will have peace & comfort at this difficult time. Will never forget you my friend.

I had the absolute pleasure of working with DJ this past year+, and I feel so lucky to have crossed paths with him. He was always so kind and funny with a healthy dose of dry curmudgeon to go along with it all. He was so much fun to work with and be around. He is missed so deeply and I know that void will be felt for a very long time. You as his family have been heavy on my mind, and I know I'm just one of many sending all their love and prayers your way. Thank you for sharing him with us all. May you be surrounded by all the peace and comfort possible, during this time.
