Dean Leo Butterfield

September 1, 1926 - May 21, 2015

Dean was born on September 1, 1926 and was the fourth child of Franklin and Lucy Butterfield of Taylorsville.

He was drafted into the Air Force during WWII at age 19 and was sent to Sheppard Field, TX for basic training. He graduated from Airplane Engine Mechanic School there and eventually served in Europe, where he spent time in Austria.

After returning home from his service, Dean courted and eventually married Margaret Barben in the Salt Lake Temple, 17 Nov 1949.  They built a home in Taylorsville where they raised their three children.

Dean earned his first dollar as a boy by trapping gophers at 5¢ each.  His work experience included working in the sugar beet fields and working at Kennecott. But most of his working career was spent with Granite School District as the metal shop foreman.  He also fixed cars on the side, out of the garage in his home, for additional income.

He had a strong testimony of the gospel, which he enjoyed sharing with his family, and he served in various callings within the LDS church.

Dean loved being with his family. He spent time gardening, bowling, camping, going to Swiss Days festivities in Midway, attending the ball games of his kids and grandkids, and playing card games with family and friends. Another treat would be when he played his harmonica.

Dean is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Alfred and Stephen, sister Pearl (Levie) and daughter Judy (Hansen). He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Margaret; sisters Lucy (Medeck) and Fay (Wetzel); sons Brent (Kim) and DeMar (Ann); grandkids Jasen (Kari), Tarina, Tami (Steve), Taunie (James), Ryan, Craig, Camille (Brad), Brittany (Brian), Bryce, Reese and Carson; and 17 great-grandkids.

A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, May 27th from 6 to 8PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, SLC. Complimentary valet parking will be available at the north entrance. Graveside service will follow on Thursday, May 28th at 1:00 PM at West Jordan City Cemetery, 1300 West 7800 South, West Jordan.

My wife and I would like to let you know that you will be in our prayers and hope that the memories of Dean and his love for the church will help you through this next week. We didn't know Dean very well because we are new to the Reunion Village area. I did see him in church and talked to him on occasions. He seemed like a very nice person. It is always hard to loose a loved one. All the ward will miss him.

Margaret, my prayers are with you at this difficult time. I remember visiting with you and Dean at your home in Taylorsville as a young girl. May you find peace and comfort knowing that Dean is at rest and reunited with Judy again. Sharon

I never wanted this day to come. He was a special cousin that was always part of my family. As a nephew, he was the apple of my mother's eye and she passed this love on for him to her children. The greatest compliment I could give Dean is his devotion and love to Margaret. One was usually referred to with the other. "Dean and Margaret" is such tribute to their life together. He always had a smile and cheerful comment for anyone that crossed him path during the day. He had great pride in the Butterfield name. He was a testament to the goodness this family line has contributed to making the world a better place. With pride and love I am so blessed to call him my cousin. I have a firm testimony that this relationship will continue. Always your cousin, Marlene Teague
