Dennis C. Grasteit
May 16, 1941 - November 27, 2023
Our beloved husband and father returned home on November 27, 2023 at the age of 82 years old. He passed due to complications arising from Waldenstrom Lymphoma.
Born May 16, 1941 to Herman Clarence and Bonnie Mae Grasteit in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dennis was born a twin. He was born three months prematurely at only 2 lbs. 3 oz. Dennis was a miracle child surviving in the only incubator at Holy Cross Hospital. Dennis grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah. He graduated from East High School and attended University of Utah, studying mechanical engineering. Dennis spent his career with Union Pacific Railroad as a breakman and later as a conductor. He retired from the railroad after 44 years. In July of 1969, Dennis had the great privilege of meeting his eternal companion, Annette Kowalski. They later married and were sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple on March 4, 1971. Their marriage was blessed with five children plus 13 terrific grandchildren. He found much joy in his posterity spending as much time as possible with all of them.
Dennis was a man of many interests and talents. Especially of the mechanical kind. He could fix anything. Many times, he would invent a tool just to fix something. Dennis enjoyed muscle and performance cars. He spent many years traveling to Las Vegas to watch the NHRA drag races. He loved the great outdoors and nature. Dennis and his wife served in the Salt Lake City Temple for over six years toward the end of his life.
Dennis was preceded in death by his father Herman Clarence Grasteit, mother Bonnie Mae Grasteit, twin brother Duane Grasteit, sisters, Lynda Crosby and Diane Hibler, brother Steven Grasteit and granddaughter Chantel Hoggan. He is survived by his wife Annette Grasteit, sister Denise Woolsey, daughter Jenny (Michael) Hoggan, daughter Melinda (Kenneth) Flynn, daughter Jamie Grasteit, daughter Melanie (Brent) Zimmerman, son Duane (Andrea) Grasteit and 12 grandchildren.
His services will be on December 1, 2023 beginning with a viewing at 11:00 AM with the service to follow at 12:00 PM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on 2738 Filmore Street, Salt Lake City, Utah 84106. He will be interred at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park shortly after the services.
Special thanks to his nurse Steve and caregivers at Hospice including his private caretakers Alopa and Ofa for their devoted service. You were his loving compassionate angels.
In Loving Memory
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. During the 35-plus years we have been acquainted with Dennis, at every contact, greeting, or conversation, he was consistently gracious. He always gave the impression to Cheri and me, that he valued our association. We will miss his ready smile and kind words.

Dear Annette and family, We were so impressed by the video and seeing Denny in such an up close and heartfelt way. What a wonderful family man he was, and his children are the finest examples of you and Denny's upbringing. Please know that we are thinking of you at this difficult time and want you and your family to know that we are praying for you and the comfort that is called upon when the patriarch of the family departs this life. Though he has left this life, it must be comforting to know that his posterity will carry forth his example of love and devotion to family. Please accept our deepest sympathies to you and yours, Don and Susan

Denny was such a good guy, many of my fondest memories growing up were with Denny and the fun things we used to do. My health has not been the best, and I regret not being able to keep in touch as much as I wished. But one thing is clear: Denny was as good a guy as you ever hoped to meet. Denny, I love you.
