Derald Nielson
May 17, 1943 - June 12, 2014
Derald, 71, passed away on June 12th, 2014 in Salt Lake City. He was born on May 17th, 1943 in Bingham Canyon, Utah to Hunt and Maurine Nielson.
Derald graduated from Bingham High School in 1961, he went on to attended the Southern Utah University where he acted in Cedar City's first Shakespearean Festival and completed his Bachelors in Accounting in 1965. He then worked for several years as an accountant before serving in the Vietnam War. After the war he taught English in Japan for nearly 20 years. He eventually married and moved back to Utah, where he enjoyed hiking and exploring National Parks with his family.
He is survived by his wife Atsuko; children Travis and Theresa; sisters Patricia and Carol; as well as many nieces and nephews.
His family wishes to express their thanks to the Neighborhood House for all their care and compassion over the past two years and to Matt Palfreyman, SW at VA for his support.
Friends are invited to join the family for a viewing and celebration of Derald’s life on Wednesday, June 18th from 12:00 to 1:30 PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City. Interment to follow at Utah Veterans Memorial Park, 17111 S. Camp Williams Rd., Bluffdale.
