Derrick Frank Keller

September 8, 1970 - February 6, 2010

Derrick Frank Keller

1970 – 2010

Our beloved son and brother succumbed to 5 years of chronic pain and suffering related to IBS and incident causes.  He was born September 8th, 1970, in Salt Lake and died on February 6th, 2010, in West Jordan.

Derrick attended Cottonwood HS, Utah State and SLCC and graduated as a registered nurse.  After graduation he worked as a nurse in Moab, for Home Health, in SLC, Cottonwood Hospital in the ER, and for several years for IHC in the ICU,  and at LDS Hospital in the CCU.  Before becoming ill he had worked on LifeFlight, which had always been his dream job.  During summers he fought fires in Idaho and Montana and was a member of the “Darby Hotshots”.

He loved the mountains and was an avid “Catch & Release: fly fisherman”.  He particularly loved to fish the Provo and Strawberry.  We had many good trips to the Gorge and Lake Powell as a family with him.  He loved his two Labs and treated them as his family.

Many people worked to help him and his family greatly appreciates all their efforts.  We believe Derrick is “tying up a good fly” for the Provo without the pain now.

Derrick is survived by his parents Bob & Joyce Keller of McCall, Id.; two brothers, whom loved him very much, Karl of Salt Lake City and Larry of McCall, Id.

The family will have a private service at a later date.

Donations can be made to the ASPCA via www.ASPCA.org or to the foundation representing the incurable disease of your choice.

Sunday was a sad day learning of Derrick's passing away. He was such a wonderful human being accomplishing many things. We will miss his sense of adventure, humor, intelligence, originality, sincerity and loyalty but most of all we will miss the good times we had with him (and there were many). Derrick never took the path that was well worn, he always blazed his own trail. We first met Derrick 25 years ago and we will never forget him. He was truly one of a kind. To Derrick's family: May times passing somehow help To ease your loss and sorrow. And may the memories left behind Bring comfort for tomorrow. With heartfelt sympathy, Jim and Christina Tallitsch

Dear Keller Family, I knew Dirk throughout grade school and into high school. He was such a funny wonderful person. I still have the picture perfect memory of when he made me laugh so hard in the sixth grade we were almost sent out in the hall for it, like the gentleman he so was, he told our teacher, Mrs. LaMont, that only he should go out of the classroom - a very kind gesture that wasn't necessary or expected. He was a very funny and very sweet person. It is no surprise to me that he was a Nurse and a Hotshot, that he spent his life helping others. My deepest condolences to your family at this time - he made many kids laugh during the doldrums of school - such a wonderful quality to have.
