Doctor Steven Craig Broome

March 20, 1947 – April 17, 2012

Steven Craig Broome of Pensacola, Florida, died peacefully in Kaysville, Utah on April 17th at age 65 with his love at his side.  He was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana on March 20th 1947 to Ruby and Jack Broome.  As the child of a military father, Craig lived in many places around the globe as a boy and learned to appreciate and adapt to many cultures.  He graduated from Frankfurt American High School in Germany in 1965.  In high school, he attended science summer camp in the U.S. where he was voted "most pure," a quality that endured in him throughout his life.

As a young man, Craig dreamed of becoming an astronaut.  Craig received his Bachelor of Science in aerospace engineering at the University of Texas at Austin and worked for NASA for several years after graduation.  He then earned his Masters Degree and joined TRW, Inc., where he worked on the Skylab space station project.

After the early death of his father, Craig decided to become a doctor.  Craig graduated from the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio.  After his residency in Virginia, he practiced as an emergency room physician in the Pensacola area for 35 years and was President of the Escambia Medical Association.  Craig was a member of the Disaster Medical Assistance Team and helped provide medical care during Hurricanes Andrew and Katrina.  He also provided care to patients at Ground Zero in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks.  In recent years, he began focusing on hospice and palliative care medicine, as well.  Craig found satisfaction in practicing medicine, and his love for people was evident in his sweetness toward patients.

Craig was an avid and nationally ranked tennis player.  He served as President of the American Medical Tennis Association, and was the winner of many AMTA tournaments.  Craig was also the United States Delegate to the World Medical Tennis Society, where he was on the team that won its Nations Cup.  In tennis, Craig was known for his strategic ability, his beautiful backhand slice, and his insistence that all questionable calls were to be made in favor of his opponent.

Craig was honest, kind and his integrity was beyond reproach. He is survived by his mother Ruby; sister Carla and her husband Stewart; nephews Michael, Stewart, Bryan, Nate, Rob, Andy and Matt; niece Megan; and the love of his life Kit Jackson.

A celebration of Craig's life will be held on Saturday, April 28th at 1:00 at his home, 11809 Chanticleer Drive. Please bring your memories and pictures and love for this most remarkable man.

In Loving Memory

Nancy and I were shocked to hear of Craig's illness and passing. He was truly a gifted man, and gentleman. Craig will be greatly missed. May he rest in the peace of Christ.

Stacey - My dream is to become a weddnig photographer, but how do you get started? I have several friends who are getting married, but I just don't feel right asking them if I can photograph them when I don't have any examples to show them or top of the line equipment. I don't even have a site or business cards, either. With nothing to show, what would be the point? I just don't know where to start.. What are your suggestions? Oh, and I love your blog BTW!

I met Dr Broom on the Disaster Medical Team when we deployed to WTC. Still think of those that we lost. All these years later, these good men and women are not forgotten.
