Edward M 'Ted' Jacobsen

July 21, 1930 - January 6, 2014

On January 6, 2014, I lost my best friend and husband, Edward M (Ted) Jacobsen.  Ted was born July 21, 1930, in SLC to Ivy and Eddie Jacobsen.  He attended school in Salt Lake City and was part of the “7th East Guys”.  At the University of Utah he was a loyal Sigma Chi, where he served in various offices including Chapter Advisor.  He was proud when his son, Jon, and good friend, David Ballard, became members.  After graduating in 1952 he taught at West High School for several years before receiving a call from Bud Jack asking him to come back to the “U” to work with the Athletic Department and the Theaters.  He worked alongside Monty Howard for many years as Ticket Director and Business Manager.   He was there every day for the construction of the Special Events Center and as the first Director of the building he often referred to it as “his building”.  Ted mentored a great many of the students who worked for him over the years.

Ted married Linda Holmes on June 15, 1964, and in 1967 their son Jonathan was born. Ted is survived by his wife, Linda; their son Jon and his wife Julie; and two grandsons, Sam and Josh – who were his pride and joy.

There will be a celebration of Ted’s life on Monday, January 13th from 6:00 – 8:00 at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East.  Complementary Valet Parking on the north side of the building will be provided.   In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution in Ted’s name to the Crimson Club Scholarship Fund, the Assistance League of SLC, or a charity of your choice.

The family wants to thank Inspiration Hospice for their care and kindness – Bryan, Luis and, especially, Shar Sweeney.

In Loving Memory

From the first time I met Ted when I was a student athlete in 1970, Ted was a constant anchor of support and friendship. Ted's support and assistance was always something I could count on. When I think of my University experience and the positive impact the U has had on my life, Ted is one of the persons I always think of. I hold him in high regards. My condolences to his family.

I am so sorry for your loss. I was fortunate to know Ted & thought highly of him. He was a determined, strong minded man. He always had a twinkle in his eyes, full of mischievousness & good humour. He was intellectual & I enjoyed talking with him. He is now resting; hopefully you will find peace in the memories he has left. Love to you.

Mrs Jacobsen I am so sorry for your loss. I was one of those students that Ted mentored at my time as a student. I would of never made it had it not been for him giving me jobs to help, pay for school. I loved hearing his wonderful stories about the history of Utah athletics and all the people he knew. You and Ted were so good to me and I will never forget the kindness you both showed me as a Ute. Ted is a man that touched so many lives at Utah and I was so proud to be among them. My prayers are with you and your family.

I played football at the U. from '65 - '69 and graduated in '70. Ted always had a smile on his face and was always friendly and helpful. I am so sorry for your loss, but feel he is enjoying the afterlife right now. All my best and warmest wishes to you.

I played on the golf team at the U from '70 to '74. Ted not only helped me whenever I needed help, but also everyone on the golf team. Year after year Ted was there for anyone that needed his help. He greeted everyone with a smile and made you feel like you were the most important person in the world. We have all lost a great friend. Thank you Ted for all that you did for all of us. My condolences to his family.

Linda & Jon, We were so sorry to hear of Ted's passing. He was such a great conversationalist and historian. He contributed so much to the University of Utah and the Athletic department. What a remarkable man. He will be thought of fondly by so many people who's lives he touched. His positive attitude and wit is what always comes to mind when we think of him. May you find comfort in your loving memories of him. Dana James & Chris
