Elisabeth Anna Maria Bartlome

April 17, 1931 - May 10, 2024

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our extraordinary mother, Elisabeth Bartlome, (Oma) who died at the age of 93 on May 10, 2024. She was a wonderful mother and was always there when we needed her the most offering support, wisdom and lots of love.

Elisabeth was born April 17, 1931, in Stadtlohn, Germany, and she was the youngest among three children. She was 7 years old when World War Two broke out in Germany and she was 14 when it ended. The war years were difficult, but her family survived, and they were able to be together again. She moved to the United States in 1959 to marry an American GI, Sammy Bates. They later divorced and she married George Bartlome’. They moved to Utah where she remained for the rest of her life, while sometimes enjoying winters in Arizona.

She spent her career working for Union Pacific Railroad where she was promoted several times and retired in 1989. She enjoyed traveling and playing cards and was always committed to being active and staying fit. She was an avid swimmer and was still swimming up to 91 years old. She played the card game, Hand and Foot, for many years and was still playing at the end of her life with her same group of friends and family.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, George Bartlome’ as well as her brothers, Winfried Lohmann and Heribert Lohmann. She is survived by her daughters, Sheila Bowen of Sandy, Utah (Randy); Lisa Bradfield of Leamington, Utah (Mont); her son Gary Bates of Blair, Nebraska (Karen); and her stepson, Vince Bartlome’ of Hickory, North Carolina (Wut); as well as six grandchildren; two great-grandchilren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She will be remembered by her family for her brilliant mind and her commitment to her family. She was always the one to turn to for help, and she never failed to come through. She was the true “heart” of our family, and it is hard to imagine the future without her in it.

To celebrate her memory, we are holding a celebration of life at Starks Funeral Parlor at 3651 South 900 East, Millcreek, Utah, on Friday, May 17th from 6pm to 8pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. John’s Catholic Church, 300 East 11800 South, Draper, Utah, at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 18th, followed by interment at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery. We invite anyone who knew her to attend and remember her wonderful life.

In Loving Memory

Lisa, Sheila, Mont, Vince and Family;   I am so deeply sorry for the loss of your Mother/Oma.     Elisabeth was a wonderful person who touched the lives of many.  She was a dear friend and she will always hold a special place in my heart.   I can picture her playing cards with George and all the late friends of our German group that are waiting for her in heaven.  She will make sure the rules are followed and she will keep track of the score.   May you all find strength in the difficult days ahead by honoring Elisabeth’s memory and cherishing the shared memories that will live on forever.  She was loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure.  She is in heaven watching over you.  Always by your side, just that you can’t see her.     I offer my heartfelt condolences, and I am sending love, thoughts, and prayers to you and your family during this tough time.

This video is a beautiful tribute to a beautiful woman. I didn't know your mom for a long time, but she certainly made a big impression for such a tiny lady! I enjoyed talking politics with her and admired her zest for life. It was obvious that she loved her family and you were all so good and loving to her. She will be missed. Sending lots of love and comfort.
