Elizabeth Linsy Butler

July 14, 1991 - March 14, 2026

Elizabeth Linsy Butler was born on July 14, 1991 and passed away peacefully on March 14, 2026.  Liz was fierce, smart, funny, and opinionated.  She worked as an Administrative Manager at the University of Utah.  Liz graduated with a B.F.A. from Westminster University in 2014 and from West High School in 2009.   Liz was always fascinated with Japan.  She studied abroad for a semester at Nanzan University in Nagoya.  She returned to Japan in 2016 as an assistant language teacher in the Japanese Exchange and Teaching  Program (JET) in Gunma province.

Liz loved art in every form.  She loved her friends, family, animals (especially cats and her bird Cuddles), her car Fifi, movies, books, games, Ute football and everything Japanese.   She died in her sleep because of a blood clot to her lungs.  Her loss will leave a gaping hole in the world that can never be filled. Her mother Lori, her father Jim, and her brother Daniel will miss her terribly.

There will be no public service.  We hope her friends and family will gather to celebrate her memory and life.  In lieu of flowers, please hug your children, your siblings, your parents and your friends.

We hope that friends and coworkers of Liz will share memories or pictures so that we can add them to our memories.

In Loving Memory

I will miss you Liz every single day; your humor, your silly smirky smile, so many other things. Thank you for always being so kind and generous over my clumsy attempts at art. You were the pro. I love you so much Lizzie. Give Aunt Tina a hug from Lori and me.

There aren't words to say how special you are to me. Every time we talked, and every good time, and even the bad times where we had each other's backs will stay in my heart forever. I love you so much.

"There are things which I may not speak, There are dreams that cannot die, There are thoughts that make a strong heart weak, that bring a pallor into the cheek, And a mist before the eye, The words of that fatal song come over me like a chill, A childs will is the winds will, And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts." -Longfellow My dear cousin, you are missed deeply. Watch over us, pray for us. May God bless you and keep you always and forever. Life is hard. God is good. Christ is King.

You've been a part of my life for 20 years. We first met in French class and we became part of a close-knit group of friends. Some of my favorite high school memories were hanging out together at Marie's house, the ridiculous inside jokes we made in drama, and just being silly nerds together. After I graduated, the friend group dissolved but our friendship never soured. Since COVID, we'd been hanging out nearly every week. We’d drink Pompelmo San Pellegrino or bubble tea and catch up on things before diving into supernatural worlds with time loops, brain farms, and space plants. You were so much braver than you’d give yourself credit for; teaching English in Japan, building an online community around a niche manga, and making friends out of strangers at TryAngles. Maybe it's like your favorite character Joshua said in The World Ends With You: “Only by allowing strangers in can we find new ways to be ourselves.” I hope wherever you are, you know how deeply you were loved and how much you’ll be missed. The world isn’t the same without you.

My deepest condolences to the family. I miss talking with you. You were always so passionate about your interests. You introduced Marina to so many things that she also shared with me and that brought us all closer together and for that I will always hold these memories dear to me. What an honor it is to know you and call you my friend. We all love and miss you so much.

I went to West High and Westminster with Liz and later would run into her through mutual friends. She awed me by her intelligence and creativity and…. I was always a little jealous she had been to Japan. She left a real impression. Sending love to everyone who knew and loved her.
