Elma Vilet Dunn Martindale
The Definition of Class
Elma was born January 23rd, 1926 in Montpelier, ID and was welcomed home with open arms on September 20th, 2012, of natural causes.
Our mother was a very active lady, even in her last days. Very seldom would you see her relaxing, always doing something…golfing, water aerobics, dance classes, nightly card games or strolls with her best friend Koko (her dog). She loved to travel and would stay in the meekest of places to the Castles of Kings. She and her husband, C.A. "Buck" Martindale (deceased) navigated the shores of Flaming Gorge to the intercostals of Alaska many times. But her passion for golf was second to none and was a lifetime member of Apline CC. Last week, at the tender age of 86, she played her last round of golf and shot one of her best games in years. However her greatest joy was her family. She was the thread that held her family together, never turning a helping hand or an ear away, even if it was just to visit.
Mom passed exactly how it was meant to be, with no reservation. She lived a full and exciting life up until the last time she closed her eyes. She will enjoy the heavens above; making sure her husband has been in check for the past 20 years and reunites with family and friends that have preceded her in death, anxiously waiting for us to follow.
She is survived by her children Gary (Margaret), David (Goldie), Tom (Kalyn) and Leslie (Jonas); grand, great grand and great-great grandchildren, too many to mention, but just as important. Also, she is survived by her sister Marjean (Lowell) Steed.
Funeral services will be held at Noon on Friday, September 28th at the Union Fort 6th Ward Chapel, 6770 South 500 East, Midvale. Friends may call upon the family for a viewing on Thursday, September 27th from 6 to 8 PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, and two hours prior the service at the church. Interment to follow at Lake Hills Cemetery, 10055 S. State Street, Sandy.
Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.starksfuneral.com.

Condolences from the SWABYS . Have known Tom for 25 years , and fortunately did get to know both Buck and Elma . So glad Elma got to see the mature soft side of Tom before passing . Tough times for most of my friends at my age as parents leave us here for the next 'Great Adventure' . I will be traveling next 2 days - so hope this brief note helps you know your family is in our thoughts . Don & Sharyn

Hello, I don't believe I ever met any of Elma's children, but I just want to tell you how much your Mother's friendship meant to me. I Played golf with Elma at Mt. Dell Golf Course for several years back in the 70's. I have fond memories of those days. We both did our best to win when competeing together or against each other, but more importantly we both knew the game was secondary to the good time we always had. I had the pleasure of running into Elma a few times in the last few years, and she was still a delightful, friendly, and pleasant lady. I know you will miss having her in your lives and the lives of your children, but hopefully you will soon replace todays saddness wth wonderful memories of the past. Sincerely, Mickey Swenson

Dear Elma, First, thank you for being my friend, and for all the fun golf at Alpine. You were a pleasure to golf with - never using a single cuss word in all those rounds and never getting down on yourself when things went less than "stellar". You had a great temperament for the game and always cognizant of those with you and behind you. You knew the rules and followed them every single round. We enjoyed the "19th" hole, chatting about everything under the sum and solving the word's problems. I also liked that you were feisty - yet fun and friendly. You would go out of your way to speak to everyone. People knew where they stood with you, as you were direct, but diplomatic. I loved that you kept so informed and could dissect and discuss politics and never shy to stte your opinion, doing so without an argument with anyone. We both moved here from out of state, so we could relate to each other's former lives before and after moving here. Loved listening to your life's experiences-from not being able to swim when you joined the navy to learning to take cod liver oil every day when you were a nurse at St. Marks (which is why your knees were still working) Listening to your boating trips where you kept your boat at Vancouver Island, crabbing, etc, together with seafood recipes, etc. to yes, staying in some Kings Castle in Scotland? You took my advice and was in process of writing your history You knew joy, but also heartache,as you cared for Buck during dialysis, etc. Other than golf, I will miss our extended telephone conversations.I have processed a lot I have learned from you. Your advice to a friend recently "just keep moving" was something you preached and practiced. I will miss our get together luncheons and know you were in process of arranging one. You loved helping Leslie in her business and golfing with David along with the tips he gave you which you put into practice. Your relationship with Steven and the things he did for you and with you brought you joy and pride. Kids and grandkid, etc, please know Elma was a special and unique person. My heart goes out to you as you process your unexpected loss. May God be with you and yours. Elma, I will miss you, but again, thank you so much for being my friend. Love Deanna I

To all the Family: Elma was a true friend and stayed in touch with me even though I moved here 9 yrs ago. We last spoke two mweeks ago and she was concerned because I had surgery. I admired her truthfulness and her tenacity for life in general. Her never-say-die attitude is what kept her healthy this long. I mentioned to her that the Lord must have a purpose for keeping us here and she laughed. I guess He decided to take her home after all. God bless you all and you have many wonderful memories to get you through this trying time. She's probably smiling thinking how easy it was to get there. Emily Thorpe Friend and fellow golfer
