Erna Gertrud Wagner Huck

August 4, 1911 - October 9, 2013

On October 9, 2013, Erna Huck was reunited with her beloved husband Hermann in the heavenly kingdom.  Erna was our beloved Mutti, Oma, Uroma (mother, grandmother, great-grandmother), and a good friend to many many people.  She has been without her Opa for almost sixteen years, and now it is time for them to be together again.

Erna was born August 4, 1911, in Frankfurt, Germany, to Friedrich Anton and Emilie Wurster.  She and Hermann Anton Huck were married there on April 30th, 1934.  They were together for 64 loving years until he passed away suddenly on Feb 10, 1998.

Together, Hermann and Erna opened a grocery store and started a family.  They went through difficult times before, during, and after World War II, but they were always in it together.  Those four and a half years of the war were the last time they were ever apart.  Looking to secure a good future for their two boys, the family immigrated to Salt Lake City in 1949.

Erna loved her sons more than anything, and she and Hermann did everything they could to give them a good life, filled with love. She was so proud of her sons, and the success they achieved in their new country was a testament to the sacrifice and dedication of Hermann and Erna.

Hermann and Erna had a truly sensational love for each other. They loved to dance together at The Organ loft, shared every meal, and devoted themselves to their children. They loved to sit on the balcony and watch the sunset with a root beer float. They often drove up to Millcreek canyon to hike and have a picnic. Erna was always running around so efficiently and joyously. She would get up early to work in the garden, she cooked amazingly delicious authentic Bavarian food, she knitted and crocheted, and spectacularly excelled at being a wife and mother.

Losing Hermann was the most difficult thing for Erna. They had always done everything together, and she could always count on him. Erna was so grateful for the loving care she received from family and friends after Hermann passed away.

Erna’s secrets to longevity are these: always have a positive attitude, be grateful for each day that you wake up, do everything in moderation, exercise (she and Hermann loved to ski, and year round they would take long walks after dinner), drink exclusively artesian well water, and above all, trust in your family, friends, and faith.

After her 102nd birthday, Erna felt that she had completed her mission here, and put her trust in the Heavenly Father to take her when it was time. Erna stayed with us for so long because she wanted to watch over her family, and it was such a joy for her to see them. Her precious spirit touched the lives of all her family and friends. Now she and Hermann will both be watching us from above.

Erna is survived by sons, Jurgen (wife Suzy; son Jurgen, wife Wendy, children Roan Tyler and Alegra, and son Brandon), Rainer (wife Maria; sons Kristopher (wife Fabiana) and Nathanial, daughter Melissa, grandson Alexander and granddaughter Morgan) and daughter Sophy (granddaughter Josey).

She was preceded in death by husband Hermann, parents Friedrich and Emilie Wagner, 5 siblings, and grandson Aaron.

Services will be held at 12 pm Grandeur Peak Ward, 3610 E. 3510 S.; visitation at 11am. Interment will follow at Elysian Gardens, 1075 E. 4580 S.

In Loving Memory

It hurts much more than we anticipated to see that Erna has joined her husband. We won't see her beautiful face and great attitude to life and visits to her lovely home with that wonderful garden she so much enjoyed and took care of. May her family and friends be comforted in their sorrow. Elfie and Jim Wright

Dear Rainer and Maria, we express our sadness at the passing of your wonderful mother. She was a great lady and lived a long and productive life. I know you were very close to her and have had many wonderful memories. You have been a great son and help mate for her in her waning years. We have got to get our families together along with Craig and visit. Love to you and your family always, The Christensens.

Dear Huck Family, we would like to express our compassion regarding the passing away of my grand auntie Erna. I saw her for the last time on her last Europe trip and regret now very much that I was not coming to her 100th birthday to Utah. She was my last connection to my mothers parents side. When my mom was in America she spent a lot of time with Erna and her sister Emma, Erna was always a living example for cheerfulness and a positive approach to life, even in the old age. I`m proud that she was my auntie and I will always remember her and thank her very much for sharing her biography with all of us. Nicole and her family

Dear Family from Erna, My mother Else and me we are very sad to hear about Erna's death. Erna and Else have ever stayed friends even over a long distance between America and Germany. More than 20 years ago my mother had the possibility to stay at Hermann's and Erna's home for holidays for a couple of weeks and she appreciated very much. Else could meet the Foerster family, Mrs. Schwampe and others. A few weeks ago at Erna's 102. birthday my mother and me talked to her. Erna will always stay in our hearts and we express our sadness at her passing. Else and Monika

Dear Rainer and Jurgen and your families, We send you our condolences on the loss of your wonderful mother. My mother and father, Margot and Walter Hahn, loved both your parents and looked forward to their many outings to hike and ski and picnic and their times at home to laugh, eat, and sing. Both of your parents were models for all of us--to appreciate the blessings of life and to live life to the fullest. We are so sorry for your loss of Erna, and hope that you are comforted by the many lovely memories you have of both her and Herman. Toni and David, Adam and Alexandra, Noah and Ewa.
