F. Alan Fletcher

June 28, 1939 - March 14, 2019

We lost a wonderful husband, father, grandpa, brother and friend and the world lost a good man when F. Alan Fletcher passed away peacefully with his family by his side on March 14, 2019.

Alan was born on June 28, 1939 in Seattle, Washington. The family moved to Salt Lake City when Alan was six and this was where he always called home. He spent his youth on horseback and hunting in the hills around Salt Lake with his father Frank, attended Olympus High School and the University of Utah for both his undergraduate and law degrees. He married his life-long love Lynda Raymond on March 18th 1964 and they enjoyed 55 years together. He started his environmental law career with Parsons, Behle and Latimer before leaving to form his own firm and to focus almost exclusively on environmental law with Pruitt, Gushee and Fletcher. He stayed with PG&F until 1989 when he decided to move to Spokane, Washington as general counsel of Pegasus Gold Mining Company where he remained active in the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation. He and Lynda enjoyed their time in Spokane and made many life-long friends over their 6+ years there. After leaving Pegasus Gold, he and Lynda moved for a short time to Denver, CO before deciding to move back to Salt Lake City to be closer to friends and family. Throughout his legal career he was universally recognized as a great legal mind and a passionate advocate for his clients. He truly cared about his craft and his clients.

When his law practice permitted, Alan enjoyed being in the outdoors. He got his pilot’s license in the early 70’s and loved the freedom of going where he wanted when he wanted. He had a number of hobbies, but his absolute favorite activity was sailing. He took every opportunity to sail off the coast of Southern California, sailed in the San Juan Islands of Washington, Croatia and the Caribbean. While some sailing trips were more successful than others, in every picture of him at the helm you can see the absolutely pure joy in his face – whether the wind was blowing or not – and that is the joy his family will always remember.
Throughout his life he found great happiness and pride in his family. He loved watching his three kids grow and learn and then have families of their own. He was his kid’s biggest fan and watched and coached with passion. He loved his six grandchildren dearly and could often be found at the baseball field, soccer field, volleyball court or gymnastics meets cheering them on. Wherever he and Lynda were they remained die-hard Ute fans and as members of FEHPA could be found with friends at the “fire truck” on most Utah home football Saturdays.

He is survived by his wife Lynda, sons Andy (Annie) and Scott (Renee) and daughter Melissa (Troy) and their kids Ian, A.J., Maya, Grace, Jake and Olivia as well as his sister Evelyn (Steve). We will miss him terribly but know he’s now free to sail wherever the winds take him.

A funeral service will be held at Wasatch Presbyterian Church on April 26th at 11:00 a.m. and a celebration of Alan’s life will be held later that evening from 5:00 – 7:00 at Starks Funeral Parlor. Guests are encouraged to use the complimentary valet parking provided on the north side of the building.  In lieu of flowers the family would encourage donations to any charity of choice.

In Loving Memory

I was a fellow member with Alan of the Olympus class of '57. Although we were not close friends, I enjoyed it when I was around him and remember his smile and a fun loving laugh. My wife Nance (also a member of the class of '57) extend our condolences to the family and wish you peace. I enjoyed reading more about Alan's life, having mostly lost contact with him over the years. It sounds like he led a very good and fulfilling life.

Dear Lynda I am sorry to learn of Alan's passing. I know how difficult it is to learn to live without your loved one. Your children, grandchildren and friends will be of great comfort. You are such an upbeat and interesting person, I'm sure you will make it a positive experience. Although not an easy one. I've enjoyed getting to know you through our Monument Park lunch bunch days. Hope you will keep attending this summer so I can visit with you. With much Love Deanne Randall

Lynda, it was really sad speaking to you today. I am sorry I was not able to say goodbye to Al and help you in your time of need. Al was a great friend and confidante while we were at PBL together. I always respected his abilities, personality and willingness to speak up when necessary. He was a really good guy and friend. I will miss him.

Lynda, I’m very sorry to hear of Alan’s passing. I have very fond memories of working with him and our times together at Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation institutes over the years. He was a great lawyer and one of my all time favourite clients. More importantly, he was a kind and decent man. I’m sure you and the rest of your family feel his loss deeply. My prayer is that God’s peace would surround, sustain and encourage you all.
