Fredia Mae Royster Kirby

Doll

Our beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and great aunt peacefully departed on May 16th, 2009.  Fredia Mae Royster Kirby was born January 9th, 1931 in East St. Louis, Illinois to Ruby Rose Cochran and Edward J. Royster who preceded her in death.

At a young age, Fredia moved from Illinois to Salt Lake City after graduating from South High School.  She attended Stevens-Henager College for business administration.  She met and married Johnnie Kirby on April 24, 1951.  Shortly after marriage she started a family in SLC, Utah.  As a family they lived in Spokane, Kansas City, MO.  As a military wife, Fredia lived in Germany and enjoyed traveling through out Europe.  She retired from Salt Lake City Corporation after 20 years of service.

Her interests included reading, especially the Bible, needleworking, seamstress including doll-clothing, photography, and other crafting.  Her greatest interest was her family.  She lived giving and caring selflessly to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survived by her husband Johnnie Kirby; six children Lisa, Bobby, Valerie, Crystal, Pierre, Victor; 20 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister Naomi Jean Coleman; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded by her parents; grandson Tyrone; and sister Virginia.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, May 21st from 6 to 8 PM at Calvary Baptist Church, 1090 South State Street, Salt Lake City.  A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 22nd, at 9:00 AM also at the church.

During my 22 years of Salt Lake City Police Department service I had considerable contact with Fredia. She always had a smile for everyone, and always seemed ready, willing and able to listen to the other persons viewpoint, even if they did not like what her job intailed. She was a fine lady, and I considered her a friend. Sorry for your loss. Sincerely, Ron Greenleaf SLCPD-Retired

Grandma Kirby was always kind and gentle -- a sweet spirit who filled a room at family parties with tender grace and a pretty smile. We will miss her and wish her family all the comfort they need for their broken hearts. Her spirit will live on for me when I look in the warming smiles of her great-grandchildren.

I have thought about Fredia a lot lately and remembered what a fine co-worker she was. I had the privilege of working with Fredia at Transportation. She was a great person. She loved talking about her children and grandchildren. I am sorry for your loss. I will treasure my memories.
