Gale Carrington Volkman passed away peacefully on July 25, 2025 after a brief illness. Born on December 19,1945 in Washington, D.C. to John and Nancy Carrington, Gale lived a life filled with friendships, adventure and achievement.
As a young woman, Gale excelled in academics and public speaking, becoming a National Debate Champion and starring on the television program Youth Wants to Know. She attended Georgetown University and American University, later pursuing a successful career as a retail buyer.
In 1968, Gale met the love of her life, Henry Volkman. The two married that same year and made Salt Lake City their home, building a life centered on family, friendships and community involvement. Gale was deeply committed to charitable work, contributing her time and talents to organizations such as the Junior League, Hogle Zoo, ArtSpace and Guadalupe Schools. She also served as President of the Utah Tennis Association and volunteered extensively with the United States Tennis Association.
Gale loved to play golf and tennis and was an active member of the Cottonwood Country Club, Willow Creek Country Club and the Town Club. An avid reader and lifelong learner, Gale was known for her sharp wit and sense of humor, which endeared her to an extensive circle of cherished friends.
Above all, Gale treasured her family and menagerie of pets. Her greatest joy was being “Gaga” to beloved grandchildren Ava and Henry, and the many friends who considered her their family.
Gale is survived by her devoted husband of 57 years, Hank; daughters Meghan Pitts (Scott) and Pamela Garrett (Richard); grandchildren Ava and Henry Pitts; and her sister Pamela Edwards (Harry).
A celebration of Gale’s life will be held for family and friends on Friday, August 22, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Willow Creek Country Club.
