Gary Edward May

July 19, 1942 - December 29, 2022

Gary Edward May, 80, passed away December 29, 2022, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Gary was born July 19,1942 to Jay Theodore and Orpha Fay Lazenby May. He was the second son of 5 brothers: Butch, Dale, Ted and Tom. He attended Granger High School where he excelled in football and varsity wrestling. As a student at The University of Utah, he pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science. He remained a lifetime Utah football fan and attended many games throughout his life with family members and fellow alums.

Among his many accomplishments, Gary spearheaded several clean energy hydro-electric projects throughout the world including Idaho, Hawaii, and the Philippines.

Gary was an avid outdoorsman, skilled in hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, and skiing. He shared these passions with his children and grandchildren, teaching his skills to them and passing on a respect and love for nature.

He married his first wife, Marilyn Wilson, on January 19,1963. They raised their 10 children together for nearly fifty years. Later, he married Judy Maxwell Turner May in 2012.

Gary is survived by his brother, Ted, children Angela, Melissa, Gordon, Julia, Daniel, John, Matthew, James, Steven, and Michael, and by 30 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Butch, Dale, and Tom and his second wife, Judy.

His big heart and unwavering generosity will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A Celebration of Gary's Life will be on Friday, February 3, 2023 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East.  Guests are encouraged to use the parking and entrance on the north side of the building.

I knew him most of my life.  He was kind and generous and fun.  I am just hearing of his passing in Jan. 2024.  He was not perfect, but I think he really wanted to be.
