Gary Kay Kessimakis passed away peacefully at his home on August 1 at the age of 83.
Born on December 31, 1942, in Murray, Utah, Gary spent his entire life in the community he proudly called home. For decades, Gary was a familiar face through the family business, Kessimakis Produce, where he earned the respect of customers, friends, neighbors, and competitors alike. While he was a successful businessman, his greatest accomplishment and lasting legacy is the family he leaves behind.
Gary is survived by his best friend, Linda, his beloved wife of 65 years; his son, James (Terry); six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. To them, he passed on not only his love, but also the values that defined his life—hard work, integrity, and always doing what was right.
Gary had a mischievous spirit and a deep sense of adventure. Together, he and Linda traveled the world, embracing every opportunity to experience new places and cultures. It often seemed the list of destinations they hadn’t visited was shorter than the list of those they had.
He also had a special place in his heart for animals, especially strays. It was not uncommon to find neighborhood cats gathered on his back porch, where Gary made sure they were always fed. Beneath his gruff exterior was a remarkably tender and compassionate heart, one that quietly cared for both people and animals alike.
Gary also treasured the friendships that stood the test of time. He was blessed to share lifelong friendships with Sherm Freeze and Tom Caldwell, friendships built on loyalty, laughter, and countless memories over the years.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Lucille Kessimakis; his son, Michael; his brother, Dale; and his sister, Donna Corak.
A Celebration of Gary’s Life will be held at Stark Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City, on Friday, August 14, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of Gary’s life.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 15, at 10:00 a.m. at Murray City Cemetery.
