Gary Kay Kessimakis
December 31, 1942 - August 1, 2026
Gary Kay Kessimakis passed away peacefully at his home on August 1 at the age of 83.
Born on December 31, 1942, in Murray, Utah, Gary spent his entire life in the community he proudly called home. For decades, Gary was a familiar face through the family business, Kessimakis Produce, where he earned the respect of customers, friends, neighbors, and competitors alike. While he was a successful businessman, his greatest accomplishment and lasting legacy is the family he leaves behind.
Gary is survived by his best friend, Linda, his beloved wife of 65 years; his son, James (Terry); six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. To them, he passed on not only his love, but also the values that defined his life—hard work, integrity, and always doing what was right.
Gary had a mischievous spirit and a deep sense of adventure. Together, he and Linda traveled the world, embracing every opportunity to experience new places and cultures. It often seemed the list of destinations they hadn’t visited was shorter than the list of those they had.
He also had a special place in his heart for animals, especially strays. It was not uncommon to find neighborhood cats gathered on his back porch, where Gary made sure they were always fed. Beneath his gruff exterior was a remarkably tender and compassionate heart, one that quietly cared for both people and animals alike.
Gary also treasured the friendships that stood the test of time. He was blessed to share lifelong friendships with Sherm Freeze and Tom Caldwell, friendships built on loyalty, laughter, and countless memories over the years.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Lucille Kessimakis; his son, Michael; his brother, Dale; and his sister, Donna Corak.
A Celebration of Gary’s Life will be held at Stark Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City, on Friday, August 14, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of Gary’s life.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 15, at 10:00 a.m. at Murray City Cemetery.

It’s hard to put into words the years and years of memories. Gary was a father figure and mentor to me. He taught me a lot about business. I could ask him advice on tough situations for business and in life. He was great at common sense thinking and how to treat people fairly. I appreciate his patience with me over the years in our business dealings as I was young and learning. I remember the dogs he’d take care of on the back dock and the dogs loved him back. They knew he loved them back as well. Their little Jack Russel would hang out with him after work. That dog inspired us to get one too. He had those neat cars that were always in immaculate condition. Another lesson he taught me in taking care of things. I truly will miss him and will think of him often. My heartfelt condolences to Linda, James and Jamie. It seems too soon.

Linda, I truly enjoyed our business relationship and found you and Gary as trustworthy as any business relationship I have ever had. My respect for both of you has always been of the highest level. I will never forget that. Even though we didn't keep in touch through the years, we did run into each other now and then and had several delightful conversations. Linda I must tell you that out of the blue last Sunday August 2nd or Monday August 3rd, 2026 I was fixing breakfast when I thought of you and Gary and our relationship; now I know why. My deepest sympathy on your loss. I know you have many friends and family who are giving their support and love at this sad time, and I hope you are doing well.
