George Clarence Howze

February 10, 1938 - December 6, 2016

George Clarence Howze, husband, father and friend, died on December 6 after a long struggle with pulmonary hypertension. Born on February 10, 1938, to Ruth Wilhoit and James Carroll Howze, in Gainesville, FL.
George graduated from Phillips High School and the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He joined the Air Force and served near the Red Sea. Regarding his service there he would say he could tell you what he did, but he'd have to
kill you. In 1961, he joined the Birmingham Police Department, where he served for 23 years. Quickly rising through the ranks, George became a Sergeant in 1966 and Lieutenant in 1969. At the age of 34, George became the youngest Captain on the force. He was known for his integrity, by-the-book style and his sense of humor.
George married Nancy Donna Jones, and had three children; Ronald Stuart Howze and Lori Howze Avrett, both deceased, and Roderick Kent Howze, Cullman, AL. In 1984, George married Katharine Biele and had a son, Raymond I. Howze, Nashville, TN.
In Utah, George worked for Westminster College and Loomis Fargo. Always an avid supporter of the Alabama Crimson Tide, Saturdays in the Fall were usually spent cheering on the football team as it rolled through the SEC. He lived through 12 national championships.
George was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: James C. Howze, Jr. and John Thomas Howze. He is survived by two sisters: Rosemary Gowdy (George), Birmingham, AL, Carolyn Howze Neff, Pensacola, FL; grandsons John Avrett, Jeremy Howze, Kevin Howze; granddaughters Hillary Howze, Anabelle Howze, Lily Howze and many nieces and nephews.
