George Harry Burningham Jr.

August 23, 1935 - January 21, 2026

George Harry Burningham Jr., known to many by the nicknames “Grumpy” and “Big George,” passed away on January 21, 2026, surrounded by the love of those who knew him best. While the name might suggest otherwise, anyone who truly knew George understood the irony—he was one of the most gregarious people you could ever meet. Wherever he went, he seemed to know someone, and if he didn’t, he soon would. George proudly served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Helena as a machinist. During his Navy years, he was also known as “Bulldog,” a nickname that reflected his strong presence and the camaraderie he shared with his shipmates. Following his military service, he continued his career as a machinist for the SLC Water Department, where his skill and dedication were well respected by colleagues and the community alike.

George had a true love for life’s simple joys, especially music, dancing, and golf. He loved to dance the Twist, and whenever he did, it brought smiles and laughter to everyone around him. Whether on the golf course or at a gathering, his presence—full of warmth, humor, and energy—was always felt and never forgotten.

Above all, George will be remembered for his larger-than-life personality, his gift for connecting with people, and the many stories that followed him wherever he was known. Grandpa was a good guy. He did not live in black and white; his world was in technicolor, and his family will always cherish the love, guidance, and laughter he shared with them.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Millie; their five children, Bob, Don, Jeani, Ed (and spouse Jana), and Leo; his two brothers, Leonard and Larry; 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his sons, Steven and Kenneth; his granddaughter, Kristina; and his sister, Colleen, and brother, Jimmy.

Services will be held on Friday, January 30 at St. Ann Catholic Church, 500 E 2100 S, as follows:

Viewing: 10:00 AM

Mass:11:00 AM

Burial: 12:30 PM Memorial Mountain View Cemetery, 3115 E Bengal Blvd Ceremony

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wounded Warriors at https:// support.woundedwarriorproject.org and Paralyzed Veterans of America at https://secure.pva.org.

Together, his family and friends carry forward his remarkable legacy of love, laughter, service, and connection.

George will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the honor of knowing him.
