Gloria Ann Hanley

February 19, 1931 - September 1, 2018

A rare bird passed away on September 1, 2018. Gloria Ann Smith Hanley. Born February 19, 1931 to Theodore L. Smith and Eva Tolley Smith in Nephi, Utah. Three days later she was ensconced on the corner of Woodside and King Road in the depression era mining camp of Park City, Utah; where she relished life and thrived in the surrounding canyons. A natural born athlete she excelled in all sports if it included a ball, especially golf. You never borrowed or touched her clubs. Graduated from Park City High school and a member of Old Town St. Mary's Catholic Church. Married 1950 and divorced 1968. She retained the Hanley name so she would always have a connection to her two sons; John Michael Hanley and Timothy Joseph Hanley. Gloria worked long hours in low paying jobs in the early days of the edgling ski resort industry to provide for her sons and keep them in skiing programs for which they are eternally grateful. Gloria loved reading biographies speci cally sports biographies. She was a keen competitor in scrabble, card games and crosswords. A pro cient knitter she foisted some unique creations on unsuspecting recipients. The eldest of ve siblings she saw the passing of her sister Marian Murnin, brothers Ted, John and Ed Smith. Gloria was laid to rest in Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Both of her sons would like to acknowledge Sean Murnin and Gloria Nicholas for their kindness in her declining years. If you are familiar with the serene sublime violin solo of Vaughn Williams “The Lark Ascending” play it on your devices sometime and know Gloria is blissfully playing the back nine on a beautiful spring day in stardust.

In Loving Memory

What a beautiful memorial you wrote, Joe and Mike. It really conveyed Gloria well. I am sorry for your loss but what a long life she had and I truly think the best and most fulfilling were her retirement years in SLC. When you hear thunder, it will just be Gloria throwing her clubs or hitting a nice long ball off the tee!

Mike & Joe, So sorry to hear about your Mom, our sincere condolences. Speaking about the corner of Woodside and King Road in her obituary, brought back good memories of old Park City. There were plenty of characters in Park City when were we going up and to say Gloria was one of them, is an understatement. I say that in the most complementary way?you just had to love her!
