Gregory William Otley
December 29, 1981 - February 5, 2024
Greg passed away the first weekend of February 2024, exact date unknown, of a possible heart attack. He was born December 29, 1981 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Reid and Judy Otley and big sister Heather. He was big brother to Darren and Susan. He grew up in the Rose Park area of Salt Lake City. He attended Jackson Elementary, Northwest Intermediate and graduated as part of West High class of 2000 and studied some at Salt Lake Community College.
Growing up, Greg enjoyed playing sports in the backyard, watching WWF wrestling, video games, loud music, going to Junior’s card shop, spending all his quarters on Street Fighter 2 at the sub shop and Tilt at the mall. He played on teams of Jr. Jazz, Peewee football, Rose Park Baseball, as well as Football for West High # 71.
In his later years he loved U of U Sports; especially Football, He loved a good tailgate party, cooking and experimenting with recipes, trying new restaurants, fishing, spoiling his mom and creating memories with his son Charlie.
In his professional life he acquired many skills in the construction industry. He used those skills for his part in building the new convention center downtown. Recently he was very proud of the work that the crew he led did on the new Salt Lake City airport. He was very excited to share details about his “blue tunnel”, we can’t wait to see it!
Greg’s son Charlie (age 16) was his whole world. Nothing meant more to him than Charlie. He loved him so much and was so proud to be his dad. The only person that could come close to mean as much, was Greg’s sister Susan, who passed away 6 months ago on August 1st 2023. He missed her so very much everyday.
His teenage years were the start of some pretty bad choices that became addictive habits. His body was tortured by his addictions and ultimately the damage done, took him down. He had so much more to offer people if only the addictions had not so engulfed his life. He fought so hard to keep control and keep his life straight.
Greg was kind, intelligent, sensitive, easily loving, a good hearted person that cared about people. He was loved and cared about by so many and will be truly missed. We are sad you are gone but glad your struggles are over and that you are with Dad and Susan again.
He is survived by his Son; Charles Gregory Otley, Mother; Judy, Sister; Heather (Chad) Jones, Brother; Darren (Annie), 4 nieces, 1 nephew and his Aunt Laura. Proceeded in death by his Father; Randy and Sister; Susan.
A viewing will be on Monday February 12th, 2024 from 6:30 – 9:00 PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City. Guests are encouraged to use parking and entrance located on the north side of the building. Anyone and Everyone is welcome to come and say their goodbyes to Greg. No Funeral services will be held, his body will be cremated.
In Loving Memory
Greg was a wonderful guy with a strong work ethic, intellect, and sense of humor. I am glad to have gotten to know him. He taught me how to be a carpenter and other similar skills...helping me finish my basement, remodel a bathroom, and build a bunk house. A terrific mentor! These skills eventually led me to start my own handyman business....I owe a great deal of gratitude to "Otley." Always loved working on the projects with him and having great conversations along the way. We would talk sports and crazy project ideas. Always had a smile on his face and stories to tell. My deepest condolences to Charlie and all others who loved him. Rest in peace Otley!

We are so shocked and saddened by the loss of Greg. Charlie always looked forward to his visits with his dad. They shared a love of the Utes football team and had many trips and adventures following them to different bowl games. Greg will be so missed by Charlie and his absence will be felt immensely.

My condolences to Greg's family. I was shocked to hear of his death. I worked with Greg at the SLC Airport and also a brief time in 2022 during our Field Leadership Training in Denver. Greg assumed Leadership of the door crew I was leading when I left in April of 2023 for knee surgery. We worked together for five months before my surgery. I was not aware of Greg's struggles with drug addiction. I had only heard rumors. The news of his death was relayed to me by another coworker Phil. He said that he had open conversation about his past drug use and heart problems. I am glad that his family was willing to openly share those struggles in his obituary. Myself, father, and grandfather have all struggles with alcohol addiction. Even though I have been sober for many years I still struggle with isolating myself from others. I have to work every day at being greatful for the blessings in my life to stay connected with friends, family, and coworkers. May God bless you in your time of grief. I know that God lives. That Greg continues to live on in the spirit world. We will all continue to progress in the next life. There is hope for all because of the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ. May He bless you and watch over you. Brett Anderson St George, Utah
