Hyrum Simon Gentner

July 15, 1924 - June 10, 2015

Hyrum Simon Gentner
1924-2015

Our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Hy Gentner, passed away on June 10, 2015 from the effects of advanced age. Hyrum's mother and father emigrated from Nuremberg, Germany in the early 1920's. Hy was born July 15, 1924 in Salt Lake City.

While attending East High School, He met the love of his life Margie McAffee (from rival South High School). They were together for 51 years until her passing in 1996.

At the time of their marriage, WWII was impacting everyone's life and Hy enlisted in the Navy V5 aviation cadet program. Little did he know this would change his life forever. He was commissioned as one of the youngest Naval Pilots ever in 1944 and flew submarine bomber patrols along the pacific coast. The three years he spent in the Navy influenced his entire life.

After his service during WWII, Hy went to the University of Utah and graduated in Accounting. He worked in the insurance industry for the majority of his career and retired as Chief Examiner for the Utah State Insurance Department.

Several years following Margie's passing he met a wonderful woman, Ruth Stromness. They enjoyed 12 years together before her passing in September of 2014.

Hy was known far and wide as a gifted caregiver, an avid golfer, and a consummate Ute fan.

Hy was preceded in death by his wives, Margie and Ruth; and brothers, Rudy and Bill. He is survived by his three sons, Craig (Linda), Marc (Carol), and Russ (Debbie); nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; stepson Hayes (Carolyn), and stepdaughter Nan (Bruce).

The Gentner Family would like to extend its whole-hearted gratitude to the people of Sunrise Sandy Assisted Living and Brighton Hospice. They did everything possible to make his life comfortable and meaningful.

Please make a donation to your favorite charity in lieu of flowers.

A celebration of Hy's life will be held at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City, on Saturday, June 13th from 3-5 PM, complimentary valet parking will be available on the north side of the building. His interment will be held at Mountain View Memorial Cemetery, 3115 East 7800 South, Salt Lake City, on Sunday, June 14th at 10:00 AM. Dress is casual for both occasions.
