Inés Caicedo Fowler

May 19, 1925―November 24, 2010

Our beloved mother and grandmother died peacefully in her home, surrounded by her children and her devoted dog, Lilly. Inés was born in Popayán, Colombia to Maria Diez de Caicedo and Dr. Pedro Antonio Caicedo Rebolledo. In 1943, she received a diploma in Business and Commerce from the Colegio del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. In pursuit of adventure, Inés moved to Washington, DC in 1946, where she worked for the Pan American Sanitary Bureau and the Embassy of Argentina. In Washington, Inés met William G. Fowler, whom she married in 1956. They moved to Salt Lake City, Bill’s home town, to start their family and Bill’s law practice.

Inés was an ambitious career woman and small-business owner. She worked over 30 years in real estate, as an agent for the Greater Park City Company and other firms, and later as owner and broker of City & Resort Properties. Believing in the power of language and travel to bridge and foster appreciation of cultural differences, she followed these passions as a partner in Atlas Tours and Travel and as owner of Foreign Translators and Interpreters. She returned often to Colombia with her children and traveled throughout the U.S., Latin America, Europe, and South Asia.  Proud of her Colombian heritage, she fused the language and culture of her birthplace with those of her adopted home in the United States. In 2003, Inés became a U.S. citizen.

Inés was known for her fun-loving and mischievous nature. She was generous and advocated on behalf of those in need, human or animal.  In the last several years, she struggled with the debilitating effects of a stroke. Though deprived of mobility and speech, her grace, perseverance, and enduring sense of humor were an inspiration to many.

She is survived by her five children and their spouses Matthew (Karena Kolouch), Katie (Ken Naylor), Helen (Dan Moser), Christina (Jeremy Farber), and Cynthia (Nathan Anderson); seven grandchildren Helen Fowler, Justin and Alexis Naylor, Christina and Katherine Moser, Sarah Beth and William Anderson; and siblings Oscar and Maria Teresa of Cali, Colombia. Inés’ husband of 50 years; her parents; and her siblings Diego, Manuel, Cecilia, Margarita, and Bernardo precede her in death.

For the exceptional care and love they provided Inés, the family thanks home care providers Marga Ayers, Cindy Bonner, and Josefina Pérez, Drs. Steven Edgley and Alison Schlisman, Joan Hanson, Father Gally, Father Andrew, and CNS Hospice Care.

The Fowlers invite friends and family to celebrate the extraordinary life of Inés on Friday, December 3rd, from 6 to 9 PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, December 4th at 11 AM at St. Ambrose Church, 1975 South 2300 East, with visitation with family beginning at 10 AM. Committal at the Salt Lake City Cemetery will follow the mass. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to organizations and causes that were important to Inés, including Catholic Community Services, the Humane Society of Utah, and Doctors without Borders.

I loved your momma very much. Thank you for allowing me the privilege of sharing her life these last years. She will be with me always. I also want to let all five of you know how humbled and touched I have been to watch you all as you first supported your Dad through his passing and then you Mom. You have all touched me with your kindness, devotion and loving patience shown to your parents at their most vulnerable times. You are truly a fine example of what a family should be. With loving thoughts always, Marga

Dear Matt, Katie, Helen, Christina, & Cooch, Ralph informed me of your dear mother's passing. My memories of her have always been fond. She was such a sweet mother to me. I was fortunate to see her at Yelva's funeral last year. It was a privilege to have known her. May God rest her soul. My best wishes to all. Scott Starley

Dearest family, Your mother was always smiling and laughing when we talked. My fondest memory of her was in the 1976 production of, :"You've come a long way, baby" at St Ambrose. She played the role of a flapper during Prohibition and illustrated ways to conceal a flask, Thanks so much for your help on the icy road. God bless you all. June

Your mother was one of a kind with her wit and sense of humor and most of all her loving devotion for the five of you. I truly feel blessed being a part of your family growing up and consider your mother to have been my mother with all the time spent around your home! May the good Lord bless your family!
