In 1968, Jack moved family to SLC as USGS Western Region geothermal expert specializing in phosphate deposits. He traversed many western miles classifying minerals, fossils and gemstones, and donated collections to the Smithsonian.
A deacon at Mt. Olympus Presbyterian Church, Jack sang in choir, loved opera and classical music, fly fishing, wildlife, camping, gardening, outings with Utah Gem & Mineral Society, and being with family. He deeply appreciated Indian cultures.

I havent seen my Uncle Jack since 1976. At that time I was hitch-hiking around the western states with a lot of bushy hair, a muslin shirt and a red backpack. I came through SLC and saw Jack and Muriel. When I left Jack dropped me off near the Mormom Temple. The chat in the car on the way there was very pleasant. Not sure what Uncle Jack thought of my trip, but he was kind to me and Ive always appreciated it. -- Dan
