James “Jim” Carlisle Luff

May 2, 1945 - January 10, 2026

James “Jim” Carlisle Luff was born on May 2, 1945, in Long Beach, California. He passed away on January 10, 2026, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Jim was survived by the love of his life of 43 years, his wife, Bonnie; his daughter, Nicole Luff Stoddard, son-in-law, Brandon Stoddard; and his sister-in-law, Sue George. Nothing brought Jim more joy than his grandchildren Ben (Hailey), Brayden (Polina), Makenna, Avery, and Alexa. Each of whom held a special place in his heart, along with everyone he considered part of his extended family.

He was preceded in death by two men he considered brothers and whom he greatly loved and admired, Les Powers and Corky Beck.

Jim faithfully served with the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office from January 25, 1971, to February 28, 2001. During his distinguished 30-year career, he served in Patrol, Vice, and the TAC Squad, where he was a sharpshooter. He later became Sergeant of Vice and served as President of the Western States Vice Association. Jim also acted as a liaison for Draper City and the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office, earning the respect and trust of colleagues and community leaders alike. His career was marked by dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to service.

Beyond his career, Jim was a stellar athlete, excelling in basketball, softball, tennis, golf, and the occasional game of horseshoes. More than just an athlete, he was a gifted teacher who loved helping others learn and improve. He often said, “It’s what keeps us young,” a sentiment he lived by in both sport and life.

Jim was known and loved by many. His smile could warm any room, his laughter was contagious, and his eyes welcomed all he met. He never met a stranger and had a rare gift for making people feel seen, welcomed, and valued. He loved well and fully and was a constant pillar of strength for his family and friends. Jim showed up for everyone he knew, offering steady support, kindness, and encouragement.

He especially loved watching his grandchildren play sports, faithfully sitting in the stands and cheering them on no matter the game or outcome. Being present for the people he loved was simply who Jim was.

Above all else, Jim treasured his family. His legacy lives on in the deep love he gave, the relationships he nurtured, and the countless lives he touched. He will be profoundly missed and forever remembered.

A Celebration of Jim’s Life will be held at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City, Utah 84106, on Friday, January 30, 2026, from 6:00–8:00 PM. Guests are encouraged to park at the north side of the building.

In Loving Memory

Bonnie you have my sincere condolences. Jim was one of the guys who took me under his wing at the Sheriff’s Office and helped me along. He taught me the right way to do things and I always considered him a mentor. I also enjoyed my time with him on the golf course. He will be missed. I feel really bad as I won’t be able to attend his memorial as I’ll be out of town, but please know that I have fond memories of him and I’m grateful that he was in my life.

Bonnie and family. Uncle Jim was one of the greatest humans ever to walk this earth. He was so dearly loved and was one of the funniest and most fun individuals you could ever have been so lucky to have been in the presence of. I cherish all of the times we spent together, and I take solace in the fact that he and Dad (Corky) are together again. Sending all of the love and fond memories from the bottom of my heart. Love JD, Kim & Jaxon.

To Bonnie and family, There aren’t enough words to describe what an amazing man Jim was. My late husband Corky was one of his best friends since childhood. I had the pleasure of meeting him in my late teens. He and Corky were so funny together and their friendship was forever binding. I loved him like a brother and my children called him Uncle Jim. Bonnie please know you were his great love and he adored his children and grandchildren. He was always so loving and kind to everyone! I know he and Corky are in heaven taking up where you left off! We all love you Jim!
