James 'Jim' Smith

February 15, 1952 - July 6, 2024

James “Jim” Smith, passed away peacefully in Salt Lake City, UT, on July 6th, 2024; He was 72 years old. Jim was born to Patricia Reiser and George Robert Smith on February 15th, 1952.  He was the middle child of three boys and loved his childhood here in Utah where he could spend time outside and in the mountains.

Jim was known for his great sense of humor, intelligence, and quick wit. He was a devout Christian and a true student of the Bible. He loved animals and had many pets throughout his life including his beloved dog, Honey Bear. He was an avid reader who especially enjoyed the classics. He loved all kinds of music and possessed great musical talent himself. He cherished his time strumming the guitar and singing. His smooth and distinct vocal timbre will forever resonate with those who had the privilege of hearing him.

Jim dabbled in many different jobs over the years, he was an amateur inventor, expert gardener, and a true handyman, but he spent most of his professional time as a Librarian. This gave him the opportunity to share his extensive knowledge of books and authors with the public. His love of both books and gardening combined as he created the special gardens surrounding the Sprague Branch Library in Salt Lake City.

More than anything else, Jim loved to be in the Mountains. He enjoyed camping and was an avid fisherman. He could tell you all the best places to fish in the Western United States and especially loved the Uinta Mountains.

Jim was a very loving person. He took wonderful care of his mother for many years after his father’s death; and growing up, he always looked after his younger brother, Richard, who had Type-1 Diabetes.

In January 2023 Jim suffered a severe stroke and his life changed forever. He could no longer function as the lively, independent person he had once been. Though the last 18-months have been very difficult, Jim always found reasons to laugh. Even when he could no longer enjoy the activities that usually brought him happiness, Jim found peace and enjoyment listening to audiobooks and his favorite music.

Jim was very loved by many, and will be very missed, but we are grateful to know that the physical difficulties of this life are over for him. We know his faith and love of God has brought him peace in this transition and we look forward to being reunited with him again one day.

Jim’s family would like to thank all the many friends, neighbors, facility staff members, medical teams and legal guardians for the support they provided during the last year of Jim’s life.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, and his younger brother, Richard. He is survived by his older brother, Tom (of Southern Utah); his beloved Goddaughter, Jessica Smart-Grady (of Georgia); and many cousins, extended family members, and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Jim this coming Fall, on September 27th, 2024, from 3:00 – 5:00 pm at Starks Funeral Parlor, located at 3651 S. 900 E. Salt Lake City, Utah, 84106. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to your local Animal Shelter or Community Garden in Jim’s honor.

In Loving Memory

I was deeply saddened when I saw Jim’s obituary a few days ago. I knew Jim from the Pine Cone days back in the 1970s and 1980s. A gang of us would meet for coffee at one of the downtown restaurants on the weekends. Those are some of my favorite memories ever. Jim always had a smile on his face when conversing and he was deep and funny and intelligent. I don’t know you, Tom, but I know Jim had the highest regard for you. When I reconnected briefly with Jim about eight years ago, we talked at length about your Tribune Letters to the Editor. I could tell he loved and admired you. I’m sad to say I will not be able to attend Jim’s Celebration of Life as I am traveling right now. My heart goes out to Jim’s family and friends and loved ones. He was a fine man. Rest in peace Jim.
