James R. (Jimmy) Dunn
October 19, 1932 - December 12, 2024
On December 12, 2024, we lost our “Champion.” He joined many loved ones who had previously passed. Jimmy was born on October 18, 1932, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to William Prescott and Beatrice Ellison Dunn. Preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Prescott Dunn. He attended New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, New Mexico, later graduating from the University of Utah, where he excelled in many sports including golf, swimming and tennis. He joined the Beta Theta Pi fraternity in 1950, continuing to affiliate with lifelong friends from the Beta house until his passing. He was an active Marine in Japan in 1961.
Jimmy was happiest when on the golf course, winning many golf tournaments, beginning with the Junior Open Golf Championship in 1953. He joined the Salt Lake Country Club in 1956 and was also a past member of Hidden Valley and Willow Creek Country Clubs. In 1962 Jimmy was Club Champion of both Salt Lake Country Club and Willow Creek Country Club. Through his legendary golf career, Jimmy accumulated eleven holes in one … WOW! In the early 1960s he started Dunn Finance Company. Jimmy worked for Merrill Lynch from 1968 through 1996, but also found time to be active in the Bleacher Utes (now known as the Crimson Club).
Jimmy married the love of his life, Jan, on March 25, 1983, in Palm Springs, California. Jimmy is survived by four children from a previous marriage: Mike (Linda); Tricia; Carey Ellen; and Jimmy, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition, he leaves behind heartbroken in-laws: Karen and Tom; Lori and Craig; and Dave and Pam.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the caregivers at St. Joseph’s Villa with whom he shared his last thoughts and stock tips. Heaven is very happy to welcome our Jimmy … now receiving many gratuities and cheek kisses!
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice or toast the Champion with a glass of White Zin! A celebration of Jimmy’s life will be held at a later date.
In Loving Memory

Jimmy has gone to the golf course in Paradise. I will miss this sweet man, who kept me company during a knee replacement. Jimmy spoke at my grandfather’s funeral. My condolences to the Dunn family, especially his children and Jan.
