Jamie Shepard Mackin
September 6, 1978 - August 22, 2017
On August 22, 2017, Jamie succumbed to the disease of addiction. Jamie was born in Salt Lake City on September 6, 1978. She attended Judge Memorial High School where she excelled on the swim team. On her path to become an educator, she graduated from Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, Colorado. She went on to obtain her Masters Degree in Elementary Education from Pepperdine University in Los Angeles where she discovered her passion for teaching. She was a founding teacher of Citizens of the World Charter School in Los Angeles. She was an amazing teacher, loved by her students, their parents and the other teachers. Jamie instilled a love of learning in her students. They became her children.
Jamie loved the outdoors and was an avid skier and hiker. She was as much at home in the ocean as she was on the land. From riding a horse at a dude ranch in Colorado to casting a fly on the Green River, Jamie did everything with an unbridled enthusiasm.
She leaves behind her heartbroken family, parents, Jim and Diane, brothers, Sam and Riley and many other loved ones.
A celebration of Jamie's life will be held at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Saturday, August 26, 2017. Guests are encouraged to use the complimentary valet parking on the north side of the building.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Citizens of the World Charter School where Jamie changed the lives of many children.

Our hearts are heavy from the loss of our lil jamie-I am forever grateful and privileged to have loved and known her, and to have felt her love in her hugs and laughter and her sweet care. That beautiful laugh! that beautiful light, and beautiful heart and energy that made so many of us love her. All people are special to someone- but lil jamie was special to everyone who knew her. one of her favorite sayings "laughter thru tears is my favorite emotion!"- we experienced that many times. My heart is with all of you who loved her. love always jamie foley aka big jamie

My dear Jamie - it's impossible to say goodbye, so I will see you on the other side, where we can laugh and talk together. Dear Jim and Diane - I so wish I could be by your side in person. I love you so much and hope you keep in mind how much you mean to so many. I know there is nothing anyone can do or say to ease the pain of this unbearable loss. Hang on to each other, all of you, and you will get through this. Much love, Aunt Marty (aka Auntie)

I knew your daughter when she was a student teacher at SMBCCS in Los Angeles. She was such a positive, loving spirit....she left a lasting impression on me. As a fellow educator, she inspired me every day. I am so sorry for your loss. The world was a better place because of your daughter.

Dear Mackin family, I am heartbroken too, and in disbelief that this wonderful woman is gone from this earth. She was always such a bright star, from the moment I met her as a little girl when I moved down the street from your family, to when she grew to a 9 year old and babysat Kyle and Nick (I thought she was older since she was taller than I was!), to watching her grow into a beautiful and wonderful woman. I have shed a million tears today for her loss, and the huge loss to your wonderful, loving family, and all her friends. Dave and I send our love, thoughts and prayers. I haven't been able to bring myself to tell Kyle and Nick yet, but when I do I know they will be sending the same to you. With much love to all of you, Dana

This is my second message in order to apologize for not mentioning something very important in my first message. And that is this - I know how much love was shared between Jamie, Riley, Sam and Kate. I know the pain you are in - it's so hard to lose a sister or a brother. I love you guys and please know that I will be holding you in my thoughts and in my heart. Love from your Texas Auntie

I am so sorry for your loss. It breaks our hearts when death separates us from the ones we love so much, especially when they are as young as Jamie. The Bible reminds us that God sees our pain and sadness and has promised that soon, "death will be swallowed up forever." (Isaiah 25:8) He will heal our broken hearts by resurrecting our precious loved ones to life again. (John 6:40) I hope your good memories of Jamie and these promises from God comfort you in the days to come.
