Janet Elizabeth Rampton Warburton

October 20, 1944 - February 27, 2025

Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 27, 2025 in Salt Lake City, Utah. On her last day with us, she spent the day hand-in-hand with her son and daughter. She was surrounded by endless amounts of love and care.

Janet was the daughter of the 11th Governor of Utah, Calvin L. Rampton and Lucybeth Cardon Rampton. She was born in Washington, DC on October 20, 1944. Janet grew up in Salt Lake City, UT, attending Highland High School and earning her BA in sociology at the University of Utah. She went on to earn her Masters in Social Work from Columbia University and her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Utah. Throughout her life, Janet poured her heart into her work as a Clinical Psychologist and adjunct faculty member at the University of Utah. She was incredibly active in her professional community, serving as the President of the Utah Psychological Association. Additionally, Janet was the Regional Public Education Chair of the American Psychological Association, Board Chair of The Inclusion Center, and on the boards of the National Conference of Community and Justice, Preservation Utah, and the Rape Recovery Center. She authored numerous professional publications in her area of expertise.

Janet was vibrant, loving, full of warmth, and lifted people up around her. She was our sunshine. Janet was incredibly social as the President of The Town Club, a member of multiple book clubs, and a dear friend to many. She loved starting her mornings with a cup of coffee and her newspaper and tucking in for the night with one of several books on her bedside table. Reading and learning were two of her lifelong passions. For the past 23 years, Janet has been an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous, doing what she always did best, helping others navigate their recovery as she walked the same path – just as she helped so many of her patients as she navigated her own battle with depression.

Janet loved politics, travel and culture, but more than anything, she loved her family. She always prioritized family trips, delicious nightly dinners that she prepared, and time with loved ones – laughing and telling stories during a meal, admiring nature together on a hike, enjoying a play, or just simply being together around a fire. Janet cherished her two children, Brooke and Brandon, who gave her four beautiful grandchildren. She loved traveling the world and relished family traditions, holidays with family, and snuggling. She never met an eiderdown comforter she didn’t love.

Janet joined her father “the Guv,” mother Lucybeth, and sister, Margaret Rampton Munk. She is survived by her daughter Brooke Warburton Flavin (Matt), son Brandon Robert Warburton (Jill), grandchildren Rowan Flavin, Callum Flavin, Elle Warburton and Grace Warburton, and her brothers Vince Rampton (Janice) and Tony Rampton (Irene). We would like to extend our gratitude to her caregivers at Canyon Home Care & Hospice and The Ridge Assisted Living. Janet’s care team provided her and her family with care and comfort in her final months, and we are forever grateful.

A service will be held for Janet on Thursday, March 6 from 4-6pm at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 S 900 E, Millcreek, UT 84106.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Huntsman Mental Health Foundation or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

I first met Janet when we both attend Highland High School. Janet was clearly excelling in the classroom and social clubs. Some 30 years ago, we found one another again while attending AA meetings. It was in the rooms of AA that I appreciate the love and concern Janet showed to those in need of a new life. She was a true friend and fellow traveler.
