Joan Ellen Moffat

April 6, 1975 - June 8, 2024

Our dearest, Joan Ellen Moffat, returned home to God June 8, 2024 after suffering a catastrophic stroke at age 49.

Joanie was born April 6, 1975 in Salt Lake City, Utah, along with her twin sister, Jill, to Don and Frances Carpenter.  She attended Catholic schools in the area, graduating from Judge Memorial Catholic High School and later the University of Utah.

Joanie began dating the love of her life, Adam Moffat in 1997 and was over the moon when they finally married in 2001. They were blessed with Alexander in 2004, Samuel in 2006 and Joseph in 2010. The boys were the joy and focus of her life. “Our mom would do anything to make us happy.” Orange sticks, Cella’s cherry chocolates, Hershey’s Special Dark and pink strawberry marshmallow salad will forever remind them of her. Trips to the zoo, Shriner’s Walk for Love, Karate tournaments, playing Uno, overnight stay-cations at the Zermatt and even a little camping (well…a few times). Joanie made everything special and memorable. She will always be their cozy, gentle place to land.

Joan was the glue that kept us all together. We have ridiculously big shoes to fill in the hope of carrying on all she taught us. It’s up to us to plan get-togethers, holidays, shopping trips and even what restaurant to go to –  everything she did to keep those she loved close to her.  She was the one who surprised us with tickets to Carol Burnett, walking tours of South Temple and the ghost tour at the cemetery.  What will we do without our beloved Joanie? We will live as she lived, and love the way she loved – fiercely and fully. We will have “shopping” chocolate in our bags at all times. We will buy a cute little something for a friend just to make them smile. We will send someone one of our own favorite things because they will like it as much as we do. We will be quirky and revel in our uniqueness. We will pick up a friend for an errand and not return them home so we can spend more time together. We will give away our own belongings to a friend to help them. We will make someone laugh so hard…well you know. We will be our 100% authentic selves because God made us and we are perfect just the way we are. This is Joanie. She was beautiful, selfless, supportive and kind. Everything we should all strive to be.  Most of all she was faithful, loving and PATIENT. Oh my, was she patient. God blessed her to go the distance with all she had.

Joan will be missed so much because she was one (well two) of a kind. She lives on in all of us but especially Jill. The twins who talked everyday, worked together, and laughed so hard they cried. They shared a bond that would make you jealous. They had their own language as babies, and it continues even now. The “twins who married brothers” will never be the same without Joan.

Ten years ago, Marianne, Jill and Joan went on a sister trip to South Carolina. This was the beginning of a very special bond between the three sisters. (Joanie didn’t have to be the referee anymore.) Joanie took the lead in planning and they thoroughly enjoyed restaurants, cemetery tours, historical locations, shopping and different churches and Cathedrals (taking a picture “Look Mom, we went to church”). They ate dessert for dinner and walked for miles, smiling the whole time. Since that trip, Marianne and Joanie continued their love of old houses, constantly sharing Zillow links via text with homes they would love to live in. God called Joanie home, but Marianne and Jill will keep her alive with shared memories and new adventures that Joan would have loved.

Joanie’s parents, sisters, husband, boys, family and friends knew they meant the world to her. Why? She told them. Do it, I dare you, be like Joanie!

Joan is survived by her husband Adam; her boys Alexander, Samuel and Joseph; her amazing parents, Don and Frances Carpenter; her sisters, Jill Moffat (Mathew) and Marianne Hinckley (Trever); and sister-in-law, Andrea Ohlson (Brian). She was also an adored Auntie to Aryanna, Zachary, Hunter, Carter and Austin.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary and Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, June 16 at 5:00 PM at Saint Olaf Catholic Church, corner of 18th South and Orchard, Bountiful. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 17th at 11am, also at Saint Olaf Catholic Church. Inurnment will follow at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 4th Avenue and “T” Street. Guests are welcome to take part in all events held in Joan’s honor.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a Scholarship for Joseph Moffat to continue his Catholic Education. You may send payment to Saint Olaf Catholic School, note; Joey Moffat or online at Saint Olaf Catholic School. Joanie would be honored. Thank you.

Joanie and the entire Carpenter family- you all were such a gift to me for many, many years and I absolutely treasure those times. Joan is a once in a lifetime gem of a human. I know she is so deserving of being out of this realm; I pray for continued peace for you all, her precious sons, and Adam. Much Love, TJ

Joan was such a kind and fun neighbor. She welcomed us into the cul-de-sac 7 years ago and let us know that our family would be accepted and loved just as we are! She gave me a personal tour of st. Olaf and shared all the special qualities of this school. She invited me to a Bunco night with all of her friends and I won a garden flower that I have in my yard today. Joan's humor and quips kept us smiling all day. She will be dearly missed in this neighborhood by the cul-de-sac crew. Much love to her family and we will support you all through this difficult time. Just like Joan; we will be there for you all and the candle tradition will go on. Love all of the Austin's Marty, Alex, Isaac, Hannah, and Elliott

Dear Jill and family, There are no words. Although many years have passed, I will never forget "the twins" from our elmentary years at St. Ann's. I have very fond memories of sleepovers in elementary school with you and your womb buddy. God be with you during this time, and may the sweet memories be Joan's eternal life in your hearts.
