Joan Marie Erbin ~ Sullivan

April 28, 1964 - September 19, 2025

Joan was just five, the youngest of six, when she scrambled into the wood-paneled station wagon with her older brothers and sisters to make the 2,000-mile journey from Chatham, New Jersey, to Salt Lake City, Utah. From her first day of kindergarten at Cosgriff Catholic School through her years at Judge Memorial Catholic High, Joan never looked back—making friends she held close for a lifetime.

A strong student and a great athlete, keeping up with her older siblings came naturally. She was a skilled skier and a fantastic tennis player—a sport she remained passionate about for years. Joan’s childhood summers were spent at her grandparents’ New York lake house—a magical place where she would return religiously as an adult with her young, fearless daughter to make memories: bonfires, boating, and bugs! For a few weeks each summer, cousins became akin to siblings—and Joan’s seven-layer Mexican dip became legendary.

After high school, Joan headed back east to thrive at Boston College, where she earned both her B.A. and her M.B.A. It was there she met a hometown boy and fellow BC Eagle, Mike Sullivan, who stole her heart. Their careers took them to Florida, where they cultivated a prize-winning community garden—but more importantly, an intelligent, hilarious daughter, Hannah Marcia. While Joan loved flying around the world in the import-export business, that faded into the background when her child was born. In typical Joan fashion, she threw herself into motherhood—carpooling, cheerleading lessons, and birthday parties.

A few years ago, Joan returned to Salt Lake City to be near her mother and father, whom she loved fiercely—and they her. During this time, the only things that brought Joan more joy than homegrown herbs, fresh veggies, and rescue dogs were her “mini-me” daughter and the life they shared together.

In lieu of flowers or donations, the next time you drive by a community garden, know it’s nurtured by good people like Joan.
