Joanne Bea Mooney
“ We could have asked for longer, but we could not have asked for better”
Joanne Bea Mooney, also known as Jo, Joanie, and JoJo, died 6 March 2014 as a result of a stroke and brain hemorrhage.
Joanne was born in Salt Lake City on 8 October 1957 to John and Betty Mooney. Their daughter Sharon, 15 years her senior, was delighted to have a little sister.
Joanne attended St. Ann School from kindergarten to 8th grade, then Judge Memorial and Westminster College, graduating in 1985 with a Bachelor of Arts in English. She had a life-long love of literature, particularly that of women and Ireland.
Joanne loved and honored her Irish heritage. She visited the country several times, collected Waterford, Irish music, arts, crafts, and history. She was an early member of the Hibernian Society of Utah, attending each St. Patrick’s Day parade wearing several standout shades of green. Joanne had an infectious kind of joy.
Joanne had a long career at the Newspaper Agency Corporation and then Media One. She worked there in customer service and cashiering, bookkeeping and advertising. She then began a second career as an administrative assistant at a Utah nonprofit, The Children’s Center, supporting events and fundraising there until the present.
Joanne met her husband, Norm, when he entered her 3rd grade classroom. They were childhood friends, high school sweethearts (most of the time), and married at last on 28 April 1989.
Joanne is survived by Norm; her father’s sister Mary Kay (Bill) Hansen; her sister Sharon and her children Jeanette, Robert, Cheryllyn, and Warren; 14 grandnieces and nephews; and 7 great-grandnieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother-in-law Robert Tilley; parents John and Betty Mooney.
A wake will be held on Monday, March 10 from 6:00-8:00pm at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City, where complimentary valet parking will be provided on the north side of the building. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 11 at 11:00am at St. Joseph the Worker, 7405 Redwood Road, West Jordan. Family inurnment will follow at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 4th Ave. “T” Street, Salt Lake City.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to The Children’s Center or Kearns-St. Ann School.
