John 'Craig' Young

August 1, 1953 - September 11, 2022

Cottonwood Heights, Utah – John Craig Young, hardworking, witty and charming passed away

peacefully on September 11th in his home with his loving wife Charleen (Sylvester) Young by his side.

Craig, the son of John Samuel Young and Joanne (Tannlund) Young born in Salt Lake City, and later moved to El Paso, Texas where the family spent three years before finding their way back to Salt Lake City.  Craig was part of the first graduating class of Cottonwood High School in 1971.  Craig met his first wife Robyn (Sorenson) Young in 1972 and together they had two boys Travis and Cody Young.  Craig followed in his father’s footsteps joining the family business Sentry West Insurance Services where he met many of his life-long friends.

Craig will be remembered by his sense of humor, iconic cowboy boots, colorful western shirts, an unforgettable moustache and always “a ray of f’ing sunshine”.  Craig had many passions in his life, riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, duck hunting with his boys, grandsons and friends and kept a yard that was picturesque and worthy of a Better Homes & Gardens submission. Craig loved all genres of music, and his vast collection of the greatest country music, classic rock and Christmas originals was always on tap at home.

Craig met Charleen (Sylvester) Young on a motorcycle ride in 1994.  Together, they built their dream home in Erda, Utah.  Craig and Char spent 28 wonderful years together traveling, riding motorcycles, gardening, collecting antiques and enjoying their family, children and grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his father John Samuel Young.  He is survived by his mother Joanne (Tannlund) Young, wife Charleen (Sylvester) Young, sister Michelle (Greg) Reynolds, three children, Travis (Shannon) Young, Ryan (Gina) DeCol, Cody (Selena) Young, stepchildren Willie Sylvester (fiancée Stephanie), Andrea (Thomas) Kendell, 9 grandchildren Samantha Kendell, McGwire Simmons (DeCol), Kendall Young, Abigayle Kendell, Tomás Young, Oscar Young, Olivia Young, Brilee Enger (DeCol), Alexandria DeCol, 4 nieces, 1 nephew and 1 great nephew.

The family will be holding a private celebration of life for his family and friends at Craig and Char’s home in Erda.

A chance meeting through a mutual friend, Craig was a lucky find. Good at his game, he became my insurance agent and friend. We often exchanged barbs, whether over my Yamaha Royal Star or, in response, my threat to get a "Hardley Davidson" motorcycle jacket! But always a smile, always with style... Craig was as unique as every sunset. I'm shocked to read of his passing but confident his fond memory will live on with us all.

I am so sorry for the loss of Craig he was my first cousin on my mother side, him and his father always had such a great sense of humor, among many other great attributes. Our last family reunion at his house, I will never forget, his beautiful home and his chickens, in which he had built this magnificent chicken coop for them.  Please Craig say hi to my mom, your father and my aunts and uncles in heaven.  Rest In Peace  Jerry
