John Paul Maher

February 2, 1941 - October 11, 2011

John Paul Maher

John passed away peacefully on October 11, 2011, in the VA Hospital, Salt Lake City.  He was born on February 8, 1941 in Providence, RI.

He lived the majority of his life in Miami, FL until he moved to Salt Lake City 20 years ago with his wife of 36 years, Jessica.  John was a composing machinist for the Miami Harold for 29 years before moving to Salt Lake and pursued an active involvement with the Disabled American Veteran’s (DAV) Chapter 6, eventually being elected as Chapter and State Commander for the DAV.  He had a deep love and appreciation for Veterans and their needs and that was evident through all the countless friends and associates he had through the Veteran’s Administration. John and Jessica have been parishioners of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church for the last 20 years.

John is survived by his wife Jessica; daughter Paula; son Kenneth; and his always faithful K-9 companion Rafie.  Preceded in death by his parents and his two brothers.

Friends may call upon the family at an Irish wake on Sunday, October 16th from 6 to 8 PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City.  A Mass will be celebrated on Monday, October 17th at 11:00 AM at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 1375 E. Spring Lane, Salt Lake City, with a viewing one hour prior to mass.  Interment to follow at Utah Veterans Memorial Park, 17111 S. Camp Williams Rd., Bluffdale.

In Loving Memory

I have the great honor and privledge of knowing John through the DAV. His commitment to his work and the love of his country was very honorable. I have not know many men who fought for life so valiantly! He will be sorely missed. The DAV building will seem not be the same without him. John

I will really miss John. I could always count on his advise and friendship through the years at the DAV. Our trips to convention will be fond memories. I recall that when I was so ill I asked John to be a speaker at my services. How quickly things change. He can take his place at DAV Headquarters as Mr DAV along with Ed.He was Adjutant through many Commanders and deserves recognition for making us look good.

I am very sorry that I had no idea that John had passed away. He has been an inspiration to the DAV and has been a close personal friend. My condolences to his family and members of the Disabled American Veterans. I am glad he is no longer in pain and he is in peace. He will surely be missed.
