John Robert Hampshire
November 20, 1941 - March 4, 2024
A Legacy of Brilliance, Creativity, and Generosity
John, aged 82, passed away peacefully at his home on March 4th, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born on November 20th, 1941, in San Francisco to Francis Dehlin and Vera Haslam Hampshire, John's life was a testament to his unique blend of brilliance, creativity, wit, humor, and unwavering commitment to his family and others.
A proud alumnus of Highland High School, John's academic journey led him to the University of Utah to study architecture. His passion for design took him to apprentice at Edwards and Daniels in Salt Lake City, laying the groundwork for a distinguished career in development and construction.
John's professional life was marked by his roles as V.P. of Development for Price Industries and Co-founder of Machan Hampshire Properties. His visionary projects, including regional shopping centers, office buildings, and residential complexes across Utah, Nevada, and Arizona, have left an indelible mark on the landscape and communities they serve. As the Owner of Sentry Capital Mortgage, he extended his expertise and kindness nationwide, proudly working alongside his sons, Jono and Christian, whom he affectionately referred to as “his guys.”
In 1973, John married his soulmate, Andrea Jackson, embarking on a journey of love and partnership that brought their two sons into the world. Together, they created a home on the Millcreek stream that was nothing short of magical, embodying John's belief in thoughtfulness and the importance of creating spaces that nurture and inspire.
John's zest for life was evident in his love for golf, travel, and music, with Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson holding special places in his heart. Known for his infectious smirk and love for Porsche 911s, he lived life on his terms, leaving behind memories filled with laughter and joy.
He leaves a legacy through his wife, Andrea; his sons, Jonothan (Jill) and Christian (Amber); his cherished grandchildren, Lucas, Kingston, Ella, Mazie, and Ava; and his brother Jim (Marilyn) and family. Preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Vera Hampshire, John's memory will forever be a beacon of inspiration and love.
The Hampshire family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Valeo hospice team for their compassionate care. In honor of John's generous spirit, we encourage an unexpected act of kindness in his name, continuing his legacy of making the world a better place.
John's story is one of extraordinary accomplishment and profound human connection. As we celebrate his life, we are reminded of the indelible impact one person can have on the lives of many.
In lieu of flowers, John would like you to perform an unexpected act of kindness for someone in his name.
Please join us in the celebration of life on March 25th, 2024, from 6-8 pm, at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City, where we will honor him by sharing stories, fond memories, and probably some jokes. Andrea, Jono and Chris - I just want to express my love, respect and gratitude for getting to know and work with your John. What an incredible man he is. After working with him at Sentry Mortgage for many years I came to realize what a caring person he is. He helped me and several members of my family with his support and way of making each one of us know and feel that he really cared. He was always showing his caring for others who needed help in the community as well. He will be greatly missed but he leaves wonderful memories and an example of caring for all of us to follow. Luv you guys and pray that you are comforted and at peace feeling your Heavenly Father and Savior's love for each of you, your families and John. I feel blessed to have known such a wonderful man. I met John nearly 50 years ago. Over the years he's stopped at my home many times. We talked about things that we both enjoyed--cars, architecture, landscaping. I'll miss our time together John. Rest in peace old friend.

To Andrea and family, I'm so very sorry and saddened to learn of John's passing. I was introduced to him through his close long-time friend Jerry Roberts over 60+ years ago when Jerry & my sister were dating & later married. He was always a great friend to them, me and my family, and always expressed interest and concern for us whenever I would see him. I truly appreciated his thoughts and concerns for us. I always enjoyed his sharp mind, sense of humor, & fun personality. He was & is a great friend, husband, father and family man, and always will be. He certainly will be missed. My prayers for your family & may God bless you all with comfort and peace in this challenging time.
